Morden was mostly fields until 1926, when its Underground station opened at the end of a new extension from Clapham Common. The parish had 1,355 residents in 1921 and 12,618 in 1931, and over the next fifteen years most of the parish, Morden today, was covered in new suburban homes.
Merton's housing, from John Innes's roads to St Helier
The borough was put together in 1965 from three older councils: Wimbledon, Mitcham, and Merton and Morden. Each part of the borough was built up at a different time. Wimbledon's population grew fifteen-fold between 1851 and 1901, and villas and terraces spread along the roads towards Putney, Merton Park and Raynes Park; after the Second World War many of the large Victorian houses in Wimbledon Park were split into flats or replaced with blocks. In Merton Park the City wine merchant John Innes bought farmland here in the 1860s and, between 1870 and 1904, laid out tree-lined roads of detached and semi-detached houses on the model of Bedford Park.
The big estates came later. The London County Council built St Helier between 1928 and 1936, naming its roads after abbeys in alphabetical order from Aberconway Road to Woburn Road; the part north of Green Lane and Bishopsford Road is in Merton and the rest is in Sutton. In Mitcham, the Phipps Bridge estate opened its first blocks of flats in 1965 and then had 776 homes, from terraced houses to six-storey flats, and Merton council built the low-rise Pollards Hill estate with Wimpey between 1967 and 1971.
The 2021 Census counted 81,728 households in Merton: 35.7% in a terraced house, 28.4% in a purpose-built block of flats, 19.0% in a semi and 9.2% in a converted or shared house. Ward by ward the mix swings a long way. In Lower Morden 53.6% of households lived in a terraced house. In Wimbledon's Village ward 29.6% lived in a detached house, against 5.7% across the borough. In Colliers Wood 22.3% lived in part of a converted house.
For the oven, those are three different visits. A terraced house in Lower Morden is likely to have a built-in oven or a freestanding cooker in a kitchen of ordinary size. A large detached house near Wimbledon Common is where a 90cm range or an AGA is more likely. A flat at the top of a converted house in Colliers Wood means stairs.

The appliance sets the price, and we agree it on the phone before anyone comes out. A single, a double, a 90cm range and a two-oven AGA each have one figure, the same in Raynes Park as on the St Helier estate, so a double oven clean is £110 anywhere in the borough.
Parking for the van in Merton's controlled zones
Merton council's zone list has 72 zone codes, grouped under 12 areas from Wimbledon Village to Mitcham, and their hours are far from uniform. In Wimbledon Village, zones VC, VN, VOn, VOs and VOt run from 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, while VNe and VNS run from 10am to 4pm on weekdays and zone VQ only from 2.30pm to 5.30pm on weekdays. In Morden, zones M1 and M2 run from 10am to 4pm on weekdays. Mitcham Town Centre (MTC) is controlled from 8.30am until 11pm, Monday to Saturday.

Booking an oven clean around Wimbledon fortnight
The Championships run for two weeks from late June to mid July: 29 June to 12 July in 2026, and 28 June to 11 July in 2027, according to the All England Club. For the same fortnight the council changes the parking rules in Wimbledon Village, Wimbledon Park and parts of the town centre. In 2026, on the roads marked red on its map, among them Church Road, Parkside, Marryat Road and the High Street between Belvedere Grove and Church Road, parking was banned from 8.30am to 11.30pm every day. Bays in zones P2, VC, VN, VNe and VOn could also be suspended from 8.30am to 8.30pm. If you live in the Village or Wimbledon Park, pick a date outside the tournament. This matters most for an AGA, which takes about half a day and has to be switched off the night before.
Renting in Merton and the checkout oven
At the 2021 Census 55.6% of Merton households owned their home, 29.1% rented privately and 14.2% rented from the council or a housing association. Private renting was highest in Hillside ward, at 42.1%, and in Colliers Wood, at 41.2%. A tenancy usually ends with an inventory check, and the oven is part of it.

Can you clean my oven in Wimbledon Village during the tennis?
Only if the van can park legally near the house. In 2026 parking on the red roads was banned from 8.30am to 11.30pm every day of the fortnight, so on streets like those a date before or after the Championships is the sensible choice.
I live on the Sutton side of the St Helier estate. Do you come there too?
Yes. Both halves of the estate are covered at the same prices. The boundary only decides whose parking rules apply on your road.
My flat is on the top floor of a converted house with no lift. Is that a problem?
No. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in your kitchen, over dust sheets. Tell us the floor when you call.
How long does a double oven in a Raynes Park house take?
About two hours. A single takes around 90 minutes and a 90cm range two to three hours. The door is split where its design allows, and at the end the rebuilt oven is heated so you can look inside before we pack up.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
Nice hardworking lads that always do a good job. We used them for our old flat when moving out and for the new one now, both jobs were done very professionally. My wife is very impressed with the results and would recommend them to friends and family.
