Binley House, on the Alton estate, holds 75 maisonettes stacked in five tiers, each with its kitchen and living room on the lower floor and two bedrooms above. The London County Council's architects drew it up in 1952-3 and it was built between 1955 and 1958.
Maisonette kitchens on the Alton estate
Binley is one of a row of five slabs modelled on Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation in Marseilles, and all five are listed Grade II*; Binley's listing dates from 22 December 1998. Its list entry quotes the critic G E Kidder Smith, who thought Alton West "probably the finest low-cost housing development in the world". The LCC laid it out between 1954 and 1961 over the parkland of 18th-century country houses; Allbrook House on Danebury Avenue (1961) was the last slab.
Flats still dominate. In the census area the Commons Library calls Roehampton North West (MSOA Wandsworth 013, which covers Binley House, part of Danebury Avenue and Fairacres, so it is wider than the estate), 84.6% of the 2,437 households lived in a purpose-built block in 2021, and 56.2% were social tenants, most of them (50.5%) renting from the council.
In a flat or maisonette like these the oven is most likely a 60cm freestanding cooker or a built-in single. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, on dust sheets, the inside of the glass where the door design allows.
The Alton renewal plan, 2025 to 2026
In October 2025, 82.4% of those who voted in the estate ballot backed Wandsworth Council's renewal plan, on a 41.5% turnout of 3,395 eligible residents. The plan allows for up to 650 new homes. Its first piece, Block A on the old Co-op site at Danebury Avenue and Holybourne Avenue, won planning permission on 12 March 2026: a four-storey hub with a library and a GP surgery, and 55 council homes in a nine-storey block beside it. On 13 July 2026 Wandsworth said the building was being prepared for demolition, and on 21 September 2026 it said demolition was well underway. The council is reviewing the proposals before the designs are finalised and is still working to appoint a contractor.
Older private flats up Roehampton Lane
North up Roehampton Lane, past Queen Mary's Hospital and the University of Roehampton's grounds at Grove House, two private blocks from the 1930s stand out. Fairacres, designed by Minoprio and Spencely in 1936, is 64 flats in eight four-storey blocks set on a semi-elliptical plan, with a circular stair at each angle between them; it has been listed Grade II since 9 March 1982. Roehampton Close, next to it, replaced Ellenborough House in 1934. Parking in Roehampton's one-hour zones
Wandsworth's Roehampton parking zones cover the old village streets around Roehampton High Street, Medfield Street and the bottom of Dover House Road. Each is controlled for one hour on weekdays: R1 from 10am to 11am, R2 from 11am to 12 noon. The council's map leaves the Alton estate roads outside both, and its page says zone permits are not valid on housing estate roads, which may run their own parking rules. No. The work is on the oven, not the building: the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the rest is cleaned by hand in your kitchen.
When should I book to miss the parking hour in the village?
From midday onwards on a weekday, or at the weekend, which costs the same as a weekday. Both R1 and R2 are over by 12 noon.
I let out a flat near Danebury Avenue. Can the letting agent arrange the clean?
Yes. The invoice can go to the agency, with photos for the checkout file if they want them and keys collected for an empty flat by arrangement.
How long does a single oven take?
About 90 minutes on site, a double about two hours. A 90cm range takes two to three.
