Roehampton is really two jobs in one postcode. The Alton Estate is one of the largest council estates in the country, built by the London County Council between 1954 and 1959, and its flats run off Roehampton Lane and Danebury Avenue toward Richmond Park. Those are single built-in ovens almost every time. Then there is the old village, large detached houses near the park, and that is where the bigger cookers live.
The Alton Estate flats
Alton West was once called the best low-cost housing in the world, and the point cluster towers and low blocks are still the shape of the estate. The kitchen in one of those flats is compact, so a single oven is the usual booking, and there is a lift. We also clean the AGAs in the Roehampton village houses, but on the estate it is the built-in single at £77, about ninety minutes, racks and runners soaking in the heated tank in the van while the cavity is degreased by hand indoors.
The village houses and the bigger cookers
Up toward Richmond Park the detached houses are a different world. These are the kitchens where a two-oven AGA or a 90cm range turns up, sometimes both a range and a separate double, and a family that cooks properly builds up an oven that a supermarket spray will not shift. The parts still lift out and soak in the tank in the van; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are done by hand with non-caustic products, and the oven is heat-tested before we sign it off.

Parking, and no tube
Roehampton has no Underground station, so the van is how everything gets here; the nearest tube is Putney Bridge on the District line, and the buses run down Roehampton Lane past the University Main Entrance stop. Wandsworth runs controlled parking, but the windows are short.
