Putney Heath is two jobs pretending to be one. On the Portsmouth Road side you have Highlands Heath, 146 flats from the 1930s with Liberty-designed art deco interiors, and Wildcroft Manor on Wildcroft Road, three more 1930s blocks holding 56 flats behind a Grade II listed iron gateway. Those kitchens are compact and the oven is nearly always a single built-in. Then you cross towards the Alton Estate edge in Roehampton, where Alton East went up in 1958 and Alton West in 1959, and the flats have small freestanding cookers instead. Zone P1 runs permit-holders-only from 11am to 12 noon, Monday to Friday. One hour, aimed at commuters, and the single most common reason a morning here gets booked for 9am or 1pm instead of the middle. The van stays put while the racks soak, so we work around that hour rather than gamble on it.

The houses facing the heath
Manor Fields has the third-largest garden in London attached to it, which gives you an idea of the scale of some of the properties along that stretch. In houses of that size the cooker is often a cast-iron two-oven model, and an AGA clean is £143 and a longer visit than anything else on the list. We do not charge more because of the address.
Do you take AGA lids and plates off?
The removable parts come out to the tank, the same as with any other cooker. The cast-iron body is done by hand and the enamel is polished after. It is slower work and we book it as such.
Can you do a mansion-block flat without stinking the hallway out?
That is what the tank in the van is for. Nothing caustic comes inside. Neighbours on the same landing generally do not notice we are there.
Are evenings and weekends possible?
We work seven days. Weekends near the heath fill up first, so a week's notice helps.
Do you check the oven works afterwards?
Every time. It goes back together, gets heat-tested, and we sign it off with you before we leave.
