Exeter House, three four-storey blocks with a small polygonal lodge at the entrance, was still a building site on 21 March 1935, when an aerial photographer flew over the north edge of Putney Heath. It took the place of the first of the big houses along the heath to be knocked down.
Flats along the north side of Putney Heath
The heath is common land, so the homes sit round its rim. Behind Exeter House the London County Council put up the Ashburton Estate in the early 1950s, on the grounds of five old mansions. The Putney Society gives it 62 acres and, when new, 1,233 flats and houses, with 21 shops and a library. Eight of its blocks, on Tildesley Road, Cortis Road, Hayward Gardens and Innes Gardens, are six storeys high and hold 355 homes between them.
The 2021 Census counted 816 households in the small census area (LSOA) covering Exeter House, Tildesley Road and Innes Gardens, and 93.1% of them lived in a purpose-built block of flats. Just under half, 44.9%, rented from the council or a housing association, and 24.7% rented privately.
Whatever the age of the block, the oven in a flat is usually a built-in single, a built-in double or a freestanding cooker, and each has its own price. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. Indoors, on dust sheets, the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand, and the door comes apart if its design lets it.
The 1930s blocks off Portsmouth Road
Further south, towards the A3, the same decade produced flats aimed at a more upmarket buyer. Highlands Heath on Portsmouth Road dates from 1936: ten Tudor-style blocks set round central tennis courts, with garages underground and show flats furnished by Liberty's. Close by on Wildcroft Road, the Wildcroft Manor flats stand behind wrought iron gates of about 1900, made by J & C McGloughlin of Dublin and listed Grade II in 1983.

Parking in zone P1 by the heath
Wandsworth's Putney Heath parking zone, P1, is controlled for one hour a day: 11am to 12 noon, Monday to Friday. A visit that starts at midday, or one on a Saturday or Sunday at the weekday price, misses that hour altogether.
The same council page warns that zone permits are not valid on private roads or on housing estate roads, which may run schemes of their own. On the Ashburton Estate and in private grounds such as the 1930s blocks, the sign at the entrance is the one that counts. Tell us your block when you book; the team needs somewhere to park near it.
