Gwendolen Avenue, running south from Upper Richmond Road, had been laid out for building by 1893. Between Howard's Lane and Hazlewell Road it is lined with the 'Medallion Houses', nos. 11-23 and 20-28: gabled detached houses by the developer W. R. Williams, almost identical, and named after the decorative cartouches in their gables.
Edwardian houses south of Upper Richmond Road
Wandsworth designated the West Putney conservation area on 2 January 1986 and extended it on 26 November 1987; it runs from Putney Hill to the Dover House Estate. The council's appraisal finds the north and east largely Victorian and the central, southern and western parts overwhelmingly Edwardian. Around Gwendolen Avenue much of the building was by two developers, Williams and James Tozer, whose Arts and Crafts houses on the west side of St Simon's Avenue went up between 1905 and 1910. The houses in this part are mostly detached and stand on large plots; those on St Simon's Avenue are two storeys with attic dormers.
Of the 7,144 households in West Putney ward in 2021, 53.0% lived in a purpose-built block of flats, 7.1% in a detached house and 10.4% in a semi; across Wandsworth the shares were 48.1%, 2.2% and 7.0%. Another 28.9% of the ward's households rented privately.

Smaller homes towards Putney town
Plots narrow towards the town. Carmalt Gardens was built on the site of a single large house and its garden, and it and Balmuir Gardens are close-packed terraces; the tennis club in Balmuir Gardens has been there since 1903. Along Upper Richmond Road many of the first villas gave way to post-war blocks of two to six storeys, and several of the villas that survive have been extended and split into flats. A flat in a converted villa usually has a smaller kitchen with a built-in single, and often a staircase to the street. The racks, trays and side runners still come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, on dust sheets.
The Dover House Estate to the west
The London County Council bought 147 acres here in 1919 and by 1927 had built the Dover House Estate: 1,212 homes, from five-room houses to two-room flats, in cottage terraces on roads such as Huntingfield Road, Crestway and Dover House Road. It has been a conservation area since 1978. The homes got smaller as subsidies fell, and a cottage kitchen of that period usually has room for a built-in single or a 60cm freestanding cooker.
