West Putney ward has 14,742 people living in 6,243 households, and that ratio tells you what the work is: houses, not converted flats. The estate is 1,212 cottages, put up by the London County Council between 1919 and 1929 on the old Dover House grounds. Kitchens there were designed around a boiler, not a cooker, so a hundred years of extensions and refits later almost no two are laid out the same. Crestway and Huntingfield Road are typical. Some have a slide-in 60cm unit wedged into a run of units; others have had the back wall opened up and a Rangemaster dropped in. It has been a conservation area since 1978, and an Article 4 Direction has covered external alterations since 1991, which is why the outsides match and the insides do not.

Getting the van close
Putney Park Lane is closed to through traffic, so anything backing onto it means a longer walk with the racks, and we would rather know that when you book than find it on the doorstep. Do you clean the hob and the extractor at the same time?
Yes, if you ask when booking. A hob is £23–28 depending on type, the hood is £28, and the filters come out to the van with the racks.
Is the estate's age a problem for the oven?
The house's age, no. The cooker's age, sometimes. On very old units the door will not split safely and the enamel is often worn through already, and we would rather say so than make it worse.
Do I need to be in for the whole appointment?
Someone needs to let us in and sign the heat test off at the end. In between, get on with your day.
