East Putney station opened on 3 June 1889, when the District Railway reached Wimbledon, and its entrance is on Upper Richmond Road, the A205. By 1890 the Fulham Railway had bought the Clockhouse Estate, south of today's conservation area, for the Wimbledon line; Lytton Grove and the southern end of Keswick Road were built in the same scheme, by the same builder, John Gibbs, and joined by a footbridge over the line.
Keswick Road villas and Oakhill Road houses
Wandsworth made East Putney a conservation area on 7 January 1987, and it now covers 14.1 hectares. The council's appraisal dates the street plan to 1865, when Keswick Road and Portinscale Road had been laid out but not yet built on. Detached and semi-detached villas went up on Upper Richmond Road, West Hill and Keswick Road over the next twenty years or so. Several Keswick Road villas, built by William Young in a French Renaissance style, are unusual for the borough. Oakhill Road came last, built between 1890 and 1900, and two of its houses, nos. 23 and 25, are listed. Wartime bombs took some houses (Ashcroft Technology Academy was built where houses took a direct hit), and much of the later change has been in and around Portinscale Road, developed in the 1980s.
The appraisal also notes that the quantity of flats on the main roads gives a somewhat transitory population, renting for a while before moving on, while the smaller streets have families who are more settled. A villa now split into flats can leave one flat with a generous kitchen and the next with a narrow one off the hall; a house still in one piece may have room for a 90cm range.
Flats and renting round the station
The Census area around the station, which the House of Commons Library calls East Putney, had 4,383 households in 2021. Three in four, 74.6%, lived in a purpose-built block of flats, and 43.1% rented privately. That is a lot of checkouts. For a letting agent, the invoice can be made out to the agency, with photos for the checkout file on request and keys for an empty flat collected by arrangement.

Parking off Upper Richmond Road
The council's parking controls search puts Keswick Road, Oakhill Road and Portinscale Road in the A2 subzone, controlled 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, and Lytton Grove in A4, where the control is 9.30am to 10.30am on weekdays and permit holders only. The search also flags addresses excluded from a zone: Wandsworth often leaves new housing developments out of its controlled zones, and new properties there may not be eligible for an on-street parking permit. If yours is one, say so when you call, so the van can be planned for a paid bay nearby.
