Balham High Road follows the line of Stane Street, the Roman road south-west out of London. The Domesday Book of 1086 records Belgeham as a settlement of three households, and Balham stayed a hamlet until the 1770s, when houses went up on Balham Hill; the first shops on the Hill opened in the 1820s.
Old Devonshire Road, the first street off the High Road
Wandsworth Council's 2023 appraisal of the Old Devonshire Road conservation area, which lies east of the High Road, calls it the first part of Balham built away from the High Road. Balham New Road was laid out by the Loat family, local builders, in the late 1820s. South of it, on land owned by William James Woods, villas went up from the late 1830s: pairs first, then more pairs and four detached villas in the early 1840s, which formed what was then Devonshire Road. The 'Old' was added early in the 20th century. After the railway opened in 1856, new terraces replaced several of the villas between the 1860s and the 1920s, and the appraisal records that many of the larger houses have since been divided into flats.
A flat cut out of a Victorian villa tends to have a compact kitchen with a built-in single, and often a staircase between it and the street. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, on dust sheets.
Du Cane Court on the High Road
South-west of the station on Balham High Road (SW17) stands Du Cane Court, an Art Deco block that The Modern House says opened in 1937. The block's own history site says it was completed in 1937 and 1938, now has 677 apartments on eight floors and about two miles of internal corridors, and was then considered the largest privately owned residential block under a single roof in Europe. In a block that size the floor and flat number are worth giving when you call.

Saturday parking in Balham's H3 zone
Many streets near the station are in Wandsworth's H3 zone (Clapham South & Balham). On Old Devonshire Road, Balham New Road, Sistova Road, Shipka Road and Harberson Road the controls run from 9.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Saturday, with pay-and-display bays and a four-hour limit. Some bays on Bedford Hill are for pay-and-display visitors only, for an hour at most, and permits are not valid in them.
