The Ladbroke Estate in Notting Hill was built up from 1821 into the 1870s: terraces of stuccoed brick houses backing onto large private gardens, about fifteen of them by the end, Arundel Gardens and Ladbroke Gardens among them. Many houses in this part of the borough are now flats: in Pembridge ward, 34.5% of households lived in part of a converted or shared house in 2021.
Once a tall house is split, the kitchen may sit in the old basement below the area steps or in a back room on an upper floor. Everything removable comes out and is soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors, the fan cover with them. Dust sheets are laid before the first shelf comes out, and the door is split if it is built to come apart.
North Kensington's tower blocks
The north of the borough looks different. Trellick Tower on Golborne Road, designed by Ernő Goldfinger and finished in 1972, has 31 floors and 217 homes; it was listed Grade II* in 1998, and most of its flats are still social housing. In Notting Dale ward, 67.1% of households rented from the council or a housing association in 2021, and in Golborne ward 66.6%. In Queen's Gate ward, down in South Kensington, the share was 4.9%.

The price follows the appliance. A single, a double, a 90cm range and an AGA each have one fixed figure, the same in a Golborne Road flat as in a Chelsea house, and it is agreed on the phone before the visit.
Two sets of Saturday parking hours
In Kensington and Chelsea a resident's permit is valid in any residents' bay in the borough. During controlled hours, visitors, the van included, must use a pay-by-phone bay or a car park; outside those hours anyone can park on a single yellow line. On the council's single yellow line map, those lines are controlled from 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays, but Saturdays split in two. Across the north, Notting Hill and North Kensington included, Saturday controls end at 1.30pm. Much of the south, from Earl's Court across to Chelsea, stays controlled until 6.30pm. The map says its information was correct in April 2020, so the sign on the street decides.
The council's guide to parking adds that pay-by-phone bays are free on Sundays, except in Holland Park's off-street car park and most of Holland ward. The team needs somewhere to park, so the street name helps when you book.
Private lets in Earl's Court
In 2021, 39.6% of the borough's households rented privately, 27.6% rented from the council or a housing association and 31.7% owned their home. The private share peaked at 55.9% in Brompton and Hans Town ward. In Earl's Court ward it was 49.8%, and 30.7% of households there lived in part of a converted or shared house, which includes flats and bedsits made out of houses and usually means small kitchens.

Range cookers in the borough's terraced houses
Whole houses are a minority even here: 17.0% of households lived in a detached, semi-detached or terraced house at the census. They cluster in a few wards. In Norland ward, 28.1% of households had a terraced house, and in Royal Hospital ward in Chelsea, 19.6%. A family kitchen in a whole house is where a 90cm range or an AGA is most likely to be.
