Young's closed the Ram Brewery at the end of the working day on Monday 25 September 2006 and moved its brewing to Bedford. Brewing at the Ram goes back to the 16th century; one early record, from 1576, names Humphrey Langridge as a beer-brewer at Wandsworth. The site has a brewer again: Sambrook's began brewing there in 2021.
Flats on the old brewery site
Planning consent for a mixed-use scheme on the brewery land came in 2013, and Greenland UK took it on as sole developer in 2014. The first phase, announced complete on 21 January 2019, was 338 apartments set round a central boulevard and the river Wandle, 14 of them heritage homes inside the old buildings. Wandsworth's 2023 conservation area appraisal says further tall building development is expected within the brewery area.
New flats like these usually have an integrated oven in a tall housing or under the worktop. The oven stays in its housing. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, the fan cover and the inside of the door glass are degreased by hand in the flat, and the door is split where its design allows.
Two-storey terraces off the High Street
Away from the new blocks, Wandsworth Council's 2023 appraisal of the Wandsworth Town conservation area finds homes that are mostly Victorian and almost all two storeys, terraced or semi-detached, with some earlier Georgian houses. Commercial buildings in the area generally run to three storeys, with shopfronts below and flats or offices above. The town grew at the lowest crossing of the Wandle, a few hundred metres upstream of the Thames, and the Thames bank to the north, long given over to wharves and works, has been partly redeveloped in recent years.
That mix shows in the 2021 Census. In Wandsworth Town ward, 54.3% of the 8,301 households lived in a purpose-built block of flats, 19.4% in a flat inside a converted or shared house, and 18.0% in a terraced house. A flat above a shop usually means a narrow staircase and a small kitchen, often with a 60cm freestanding cooker. Mention the stairs when you call.

Parking in the W zones
Wandsworth Town is zone W on the council's parking pages, and the hours vary more than in most zones. W1 alone has three sets of hours: 9.30am to 4.30pm on weekdays, 8.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Saturday, and, on Barchard Street, permit holders only from 9.30am to 8pm every day. Parts of W2 and W3 also run 9.30am to 4.30pm on weekdays, while other W2 and W3 streets are permit-only for a single hour, 10.30am to 11.30am. W4 runs 9.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays, plus 3pm to 4pm at weekends for permit holders only. On Garratt Lane most bays are pay and display with a one-hour limit, and permits are not valid in them.
A single oven takes about 90 minutes and a double about two hours, so a one-hour bay will not do. A booking outside a one-hour control, or a bay on a quieter side street, works better. The council asks drivers to read the sign at the bay, and the sign decides.
