Putney gives us two very different kitchens. Up on the Dover House Estate, the London County Council cottage estate laid out in the 1920s with its privet hedges and green verges, the houses are modest interwar terraces, usually a single freestanding cooker in a compact kitchen. Down toward the river and through West Putney, the houses get much bigger, and that is where the range cookers and the odd AGA live. Riverside and West Putney
The prized streets run off the Embankment, the stretch of towpath and boathouses where the Boat Race starts each spring, and back up the hill through West Putney toward Putney Heath. Parking near the river and the High Street is tight. Putney runs controlled parking zones with pay-and-display and permit bays, so before a job the technician has to find a legal space close enough to walk racks and shelves out to the tank, which is more of a factor on the narrow Lower Richmond Road end than up on the Estate with its wider verges. The area is inside ULEZ at £12.50 a day.
