In 1889 the developer Alfred Heaver moved his family into Streatham Elms, an 18th-century mansion on Tooting Bec Road. It was pulled down in the 1960s, and a block of flats called The Elms now stands on the site.
The Heaver Estate between Balham and the common
An early advert for the estate called it the finest estate in London, and Wandsworth Council's 2010 appraisal calls it one of the highest quality areas of late 19th-century suburban housing and flats in the borough. The estate went up between about 1890 and 1910, in a red brick Queen Anne style, on the farmland of Elms Farm and the park of Bedford Hill House. Ritherdon Road, the estate's main access road, was laid out by 1888 and follows the line of the Falcon Brook, which runs underneath it. Streathbourne and Drakefield Roads were finished by 1890 and Louisville Road two years later; By 1897 Veronica Road had been laid out and Bedford Hill House, by then empty, was finally demolished. The highest-status houses were built facing Tooting Bec Common, and on Streathbourne Road the houses were sold with their names on terracotta plaques.
Two V1 flying bombs hit the estate in 1944, and by 1945 about 250 properties had been destroyed or damaged. Prefabs filled the gaps until the 1960s, when council flats and houses replaced them. The estate has been a conservation area since 1978.
Big houses, now mostly flats
Most of the estate sits in South Balham ward, and the 2021 Census for that ward shows what happened to its houses. Of 4,428 households, 46.2% lived in part of a converted or shared house, against 18.2% in a whole terraced house. 37.6% rented privately and 19.0% rented from the council or a housing association.
A flat made from one floor of a Heaver house usually has a kitchen of its own, often with a built-in single, and stairs down to the street. Parking on the Heaver Estate's D3 streets
Most of the estate is in Wandsworth's D3 zone. Streathbourne Road, Hillbury Road, Elmbourne Road and Veronica Road are controlled from 9.30am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday, with pay-and-display bays and a four-hour limit, so Saturdays and Sundays fall outside the controls there. Louisville Road is stricter: 9.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, with a two-hour maximum stay. Tooting Bec Road is marked as a red route in the council's search. The council's parking search lists the hours road by road, and the sign at the bay decides.

Do you work at weekends?
Yes, seven days a week, and a weekend visit costs the same as a weekday one.
Can the hob be done at the same time?
