The common covers about 177 acres now. In 1800 it was closer to 400, and the missing 223 went under the railways, the roads, Emanuel School, the Royal Victoria Patriotic Building and the streets people now pay a premium to live on, which is a useful thing to know when you are looking at a large Victorian house here and wondering why the garden backs onto a cutting. Behind them the Nightingale Triangle, the pocket bounded by Ravenslea Road, Nightingale Lane and Balham High Road, mixes smaller cottages and terraces with converted and purpose-built flats. So the work here splits: a converted first floor with a 60cm built-under, or a family kitchen with a 90cm dual-fuel range and a canopy hood over it.
Range cookers take longer than people expect
A 90cm range is £114 rather than £77, because it is two cavities, two doors and a great deal more removable metal than a single. The racks, shelves, trays and side runners lift out and soak in the heated tank in the van. Everything that stays put, the cavities, the fan covers, the door glass, is degreased by hand with non-caustic products, so the room does not smell of chemicals afterwards.

Do you clean AGAs and Rangemasters?
Both. A two-oven AGA is £143 and needs to be off and cold before the technician arrives, so we agree that on the phone when you book.
Where does the van go?
Wandsworth Common station has been on its present site on the Bellevue Road side since 1 November 1869, and the streets around it are residential and mostly permit-controlled, so the van parks legally within a short walk and the racks come to it.
Will the hob be done at the same time?
If you ask for it. Hobs are £23–28 depending on type, and a gas hob with cast-iron pan supports takes longer than a ceramic one.
