Earlsfield station opened on 1 April 1884 and took its name from Earlsfield, a large Victorian house nearby; the Davis family, who sold the land, made the name a condition of the sale. The land east of Garratt Lane, up to Lyford Road, belonged to Magdalen College, Oxford, and by 1894-96 terraces had crept up beside the railway and the station.
Magdalen Park, built in two goes
Wandsworth's 2023 appraisal of the Magdalen Park conservation area tells the rest. In 1911 the builders Holloway Brothers designed Edwardian houses on the west side of Swaby Road, Burntwood Lane and Magdalen Road, with more on Tranmere Road, as the start of a garden suburb round the playing fields. After the First World War the scheme was never finished. The council sanctioned the purchase of the rest of the land in 1931 and built two estates of its own: Openview, 376 terraced and semi-detached houses, most with a parlour, and Fieldview, 344 flats designed to look like terraced houses, each with its own front or side door and its own stairs to the upper flat.
That Fieldview layout matters on the day. With no shared landing, an upstairs flat has its own staircase from the front or side door. A kitchen of that age is often small, with a slim freestanding cooker or a built-in single fitted later. The racks and trays come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, on dust sheets.
Flats in converted houses, Wandle ward
Earlsfield station and part of Magdalen Road are in Wandle ward. At the 2021 Census the most common home in the ward was a flat in a converted or shared house: 31.6% of 4,364 households lived in one, against 27.5% in a whole terraced house. Private renting stood at 35.1%. In a Victorian terrace split into two flats, the kitchen often ends up at the back of the ground floor or squeezed into the upstairs flat, with a built-in single a common choice.

Parking on Garratt Lane and the L zones
Earlsfield's controlled zones are L1 and L2 on Wandsworth's Earlsfield page. L1 and most of L2 run 9.30am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday, with a four-hour maximum stay; one part of L2 is permit holders only from 10.30am to 11.30am, Monday to Friday. Garratt Lane itself is different. Its bays operate Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm, most are pay and display with a one-hour limit, and permits are not valid in the pay-and-display-only bays.
On days when AFC Wimbledon's first team plays a league or cup match at home, the event zone also covers L2 from 1pm to 8.30pm, and its sign stands at Garratt Lane by Magdalen Road, outside Earlsfield station. The sign shows the next match date.

No. Mention the upstairs flat when you call so the time is right.
Is a weekend visit easier for parking on Garratt Lane?
On Sundays the Garratt Lane bays are not in operation, and the L zones have no weekend hours, though yellow lines can still apply and AFC Wimbledon first-team home matches bring the event zone into force. A weekend visit is the same price as a weekday one.

Yes. Switch it off in good time so it is cool, and keep a socket free near the cooker.

Arrived promptly and did a great job cleaning the oven, hob and extractor. They look like new now and for a very reasonable price too.
Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
