Clapham Junction station opened in 1863 as a new station at Falcon Bridge, where the Richmond line branched away from the main line. Each railway company had its own platforms, and the way in was from St John's Hill.
Houses that followed the railway
The station set off the building. Between 1840 and 1910, says Wandsworth's appraisal of the Clapham Junction conservation area, some 141 building estates went up in the parish of Battersea, and its population grew from 6,000 to 168,000. The Falcon Brook, which ran open along the line of St John's Road, was put underground, and the developer Alfred Heaver alone built some 4,419 houses in the area between 1878 and 1898. By 1885 the Arding and Hobbs department store had been built.
Along St John's Road, Lavender Hill and St John's Hill the appraisal describes three- and four-storey terraces with shops below, and offices and flats on the floors above. A flat over a shop often means a narrow staircase and a compact kitchen with a built-in single. The racks, trays and side runners still come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand upstairs.
The terraces off Northcote Road
South of the station, between the two commons, whole houses are the rule. At the 2021 Census only 10.5% of the 4,609 households in Northcote ward lived in a purpose-built block of flats, the lowest share of any ward in Wandsworth; 26.9% had part of a converted house and most of the rest a house of their own.

Parking in the C2 zone, Saturdays included
Wandsworth's parking controls search puts Northcote Road, Webbs Road and Mallinson Road in zone C2, controlled 9.30am to 5.30pm from Monday to Saturday. Northcote Road mixes one-hour and four-hour bays; the side streets have four. Sunday falls outside those hours, and a Sunday visit costs the same as a weekday one. North of the station the zones change again, so read the sign on your own street.

Do I need to empty the oven first?
