The northern end of Queenstown Road opened in 1858, together with Chelsea Bridge and Battersea Park. Further south there was only a field path across Longhedge Farm until the 1860s, when the financier Philip Flower and his partners, the Salting brothers, carried the road on towards Clapham and built the Park Town estate along it, the houses helping to pay for the road. In 1863 they hired the architect James Thomas Knowles to design the first of them.

Wandsworth made Park Town a conservation area in 1984, and the council's appraisal of the estate quotes an 1865 guidebook that hoped for "a sort of Southern Belgravia". Building dragged on for five decades. Houses, roads and railways competed for the same ground, a knot of lines that earned the name Battersea Tangle, and in the 1860s the shells of some 90 half-built houses were pulled down for a new line; Flower died in 1872 and some builders went bankrupt. The poet Alfred Tennyson bought 27 houses on the road in 1871. The estate was finished in 1916, and in 1968 its oldest corner, St George's Street and West Street, was cleared for the Doddington Estate.
Flats behind paired front doors
From about 1895 the builders went on putting up what looked like terraced houses, but each was built as two flats, one on the ground floor and one above, and every flat had its own door to the street. That is why Queenstown Road, Silverthorne Road, Emu Road and Tennyson Street have front doors in groups of four along the terrace. The appraisal says most properties in the conservation area are flats.
A flat of that size usually has a small kitchen with a built-in single or a narrow freestanding cooker. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, on dust sheets.
Who rents in Shaftesbury and Queenstown ward
Shaftesbury and Queenstown ward, which includes part of Queenstown Road, had 6,659 households at the 2021 Census. 38.2% rented from the council or a housing association, 30.9% rented privately and 29.4% owned their home. Just under half, 48.5%, lived in a purpose-built block and 16.6% in a converted house.

Parking on Queenstown Road and the side streets
Wandsworth's parking controls search puts most of Queenstown Road, numbers 29 to 315, in zone B3, where a bay may be controlled until 4pm or until 5.30pm on weekdays; the plate beside the bay says which. A northbound bus lane runs from 7am to 10am and a southbound one from 4pm to 7pm. The Park Town side streets are B3 as well: Tennyson Street, Emu Road and Silverthorne Road are controlled 9.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday, with a four-hour limit. Numbers 278 to 322 (even) and 341 to 369 (odd) fall in the Battersea Park zone instead, controlled 9am to 8pm every day.
Off-street parking is almost non-existent here, the appraisal notes, because the front gardens are only about a metre deep. The mansion flats on Prince of Wales Drive have their own page, Battersea Park.

A side street is easier. Queenstown Road has bus lanes at the morning and evening peaks and bays with mixed hours, while Tennyson Street and Emu Road keep plain weekday hours.
How long does a single oven take?
About 90 minutes, and a double about 2 hours, so a four-hour bay covers either.
What happens before you leave?
The oven is put back together and heated, and checked with you before the team leaves.
