The London County Council bought the land for the Old Oak Estate in 1905 and built it in two halves, west of the railway in 1912 and 1913 and east of it from 1920 to 1923, ending with 1,056 cottages and flats. Next door, Hammersmith's own council planned the Wormholt Estate from 1919, and 600 houses stood there by 1926. Both sit in the Old Oak and Wormholt conservation area, designated in 1980.

The cottages still show in the census. In Wormholt ward, 27.4% of households lived in a terraced house in 2021 and 15.2% in a semi; in College Park and Old Oak ward the terraced share was 29.7%. Each original cottage was built with a scullery. The part of Old Oak west of the railway has been described as small two-storey red-brick houses.

White City, just to the east, is the opposite. In White City ward 68.0% of households lived in purpose-built flats, and 45.8% rented from the council or a housing association.

Queen's Club Gardens mansion flats

Beside Barons Court, the developer W. H. Gibb began Queen's Club Gardens in 1892: red-brick mansion blocks set around a shared garden and tennis courts, named in alphabetical order after literary and historical figures, from Arnold to Zenobia, with no X. Most of the blocks are four storeys over a basement. The two kinds of home ask different things of an oven visit:

The rest of the job is the same in both. Racks and trays come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and indoors the cavity and the door glass are degreased by hand, on dust sheets. The door is split where its design allows.

Fulham's terraced streets

The most terraced ward in the borough is in Fulham. In Parsons Green and Sandford ward, 43.6% of households lived in a terraced house in 2021 and 49.3% owned their home; in Palace and Hurlingham ward ownership reached 51.1%, the highest of any ward. Hammersmith and Fulham has 44 conservation areas covering about half of the borough, with two more in the Old Oak and Park Royal development area to the north.

Hammersmith and Fulham's parking zones, A to Z

The borough's controlled zones are lettered A to Z, with doubled letters such as AA and JJ as well, and their hours vary a great deal. Zone A, around Hammersmith town centre, is controlled 8.30am to 11pm every day, with a two-hour limit on pay and display. Zone L, beside Ravenscourt Park, is controlled only from 9am to 5pm on weekdays. Outside controlled times, parking is free in every zone.

Fulham FC's ground adds a layer. On any event day at Craven Cottage, zones T, X and Y switch to longer hours: 9am to 10pm in zone T and 9am to 9.30pm in X and Y, Sundays and bank holidays included, with pay and display limited to two hours in T and one hour in X and Y. On ordinary days the same zones run 9am to 5pm, weekdays only in T and Monday to Saturday in X and Y.
