Pentonville Prison, on the east side of Caledonian Road, was built between 1840 and 1842 on a radial plan, with 520 cells, on land Thomas Cubitt sold to the government in 1839, which he had probably bought for brickmaking.
The Caledonian Estate, on the old asylum site
Just north of the prison stood the Royal Caledonian Asylum, built in 1827-8 for the children of Scottish servicemen killed or wounded in action; the road took its name from it. The London County Council bought the site in 1901, and once the asylum had moved out in 1903 it built five five-storey blocks of flats around a garden, 272 flats in all. Carrick House and Irvine House run along the road at Nos. 408 to 416; Burns, Scott and Wallace houses sit round the courtyard behind. The blocks are red brick with glazed terracotta, and have been listed Grade II since 30 September 1994.
They sit in a part of Caledonian Road where most homes are flats and most households rent from a social landlord. In the ONS area that takes in Carrick House, Sterling Way and Brewery Road (Islington 015C), 75.3% of the 1,052 households in 2021 lived in a purpose-built block. 60.9% rented from a social landlord, 45.1% from the council itself, and 19.0% rented privately.
An Edwardian block kitchen was planned small, and whatever cooker went in at the last refit is usually a 60cm freestanding model or a built-in single. Upper floors only add carrying: the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the flat.
West of the road: Sterling Way and the clock tower
Off the west side of the road, Sterling Way is new. Quartz House there is a seven-storey block of 20 flats, counting a mezzanine, finished in 2019, with some flats on shared-ownership (staircasing) leases; flats of that date normally have an integrated oven in the kitchen units.
Further west is the Metropolitan Cattle Market's clock tower, 155ft high, built in 1853 and listed Grade II*. After the market closed, the council estate built north of the park around 1967 had 271 homes. It was later demolished: the last residents left the old blocks in February 2010, and the estate was rebuilt as houses and small low-rise blocks of flats under Southern Housing Group. Zone N on the main road, zone D behind it
The council's postcode lookup shows Caledonian Road itself, including Carrick House, in zone N: controlled from 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays and 8.30am to 1.30pm on Saturdays, with longer hours on Emirates event days. Sterling Way and Brewery Road are in zone D, Holloway West, which is controlled only from 9.30am to 4.30pm on weekdays and has no weekend or match-day hours at all.

Arrived promptly and did a great job cleaning the oven, hob and extractor. They look like new now and for a very reasonable price too.
