Caledonian Road changes postcode partway along. The southern end towards Pentonville Road is N1; from roughly Barnsbury Road up to Camden Road it is N7, which is the stretch this page is about. It is a long road, and the housing on it never settles into one thing for more than a few hundred yards.
One road, three sorts of kitchen
- The Caledonian Estate at 408-416, five Grade II listed blocks named Carrick, Irvine, Burns, Scott and Wallace House, built by the LCC on the old Caledonian Asylum site around 1900 to 1907. Edwardian flats. Small kitchens.
- Bemerton Estate, west of the road and north of Bingfield Street: 737 homes across 14 blocks, high-rise and low, put up between 1969 and 1973.
- Victorian terraces and converted flats filling in the rest, a good number carrying HMO licences registered at the address.
The method does not change between them. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners go out to the heated tank in the van, the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased indoors by hand with non-caustic products, and the oven is heat-tested before it is signed off. What changes is how far the racks travel and whether there is a lift at the end of it. A full oven clean is £77 for a single either way.
The clock tower is the landmark here
Caledonian Park on Market Road, N7 9PL, has a 155ft Grade II* clock tower from 1853 left over from the Metropolitan Cattle Market, along with the market's Grade II listed railings, and Islington took a Heritage Lottery grant of £1,873,300 in December 2016 to put the park and the tower right. Pentonville Prison is the other thing people name when they say the Cally. Neither has an oven in it.

Do you cover the Bemerton Estate?
Yes, and the Caledonian Estate, and everything between. There is no call-out fee inside the North and South Circular, so N7 costs what anywhere else costs.
The oven is in a shared house. Who books it?
Whoever is paying for it. A fair few addresses along the Cally are licensed HMOs, so it tends to be the landlord or the letting agent rather than the tenant. Our technicians are insured and DBS-checked either way.
How long are you in the flat?
Ninety minutes or so for a single, closer to two hours for a double. Baked-hard racks take longer, but that is the tank's problem rather than yours.
Will the kitchen stink afterwards?
It should not. Nothing caustic comes indoors. The strong stuff stays out in the van.
