Holloway Road has been part of a red route since the A1 Trunk Road (Islington) Red Route Traffic Order of 1993, which listed it alongside the Archway roundabout and Highbury Corner.
Flats over the shops
The road carries the A1 from Archway to Highbury Corner, about 1.9 miles. At its upper end, in Upper Holloway, the Victoria County History describes small tradesmen on both sides of the road in the late 19th century, growing in number as houses were converted to shops or other commercial uses; by 1894 the Blounts' house and some neighbouring detached houses had given way to Giesbach Road and shops fronting the main road. St John's church, built in 1828 to a design by Sir Charles Barry and now listed Grade II*, still had fields on three sides when it opened.
Some of the shops have flats over them, and the census picks that up. In the small census area that runs along the road by St John's Villas and Criterion Mews (Islington 002F, 879 households), 4.4% of households lived in a commercial building, the census category that includes a flat over a shop, at the 2021 Census. That is more than twice the Islington figure of 1.9%. 38.3% of the same households rented privately.
A flat over a shop can have its own street door and a straight stair, with the kitchen at the back or on the floor above. If so, mention the stair when you call. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, on dust sheets.
Tenancies along the road
Further south, in the middle of the road, is London Metropolitan University's main campus, with Daniel Libeskind's Orion Building on the street front. Students, flats over shops and converted houses behind the frontage are likely to mean a lot of renting. Parking off the red route
On a red route the red lines and signs decide where a vehicle may stop, and TfL's own guidance says a loading bay is for loading: the vehicle has to move once the goods are in or out. An oven clean keeps the van in one place for 90 minutes or more, so the van needs a side street. Around Upper Holloway station that means Islington's zone P: Islington's address lookup puts St John's Villas, Criterion Mews, Pemberton Gardens and the flats at 760 Holloway Road in it, controlled from 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays and 8.30am to 1.30pm on Saturdays. No. A single is £77 and a double £110 anywhere along the road.
How long will the oven be out of use?
About 90 minutes for a single and about 2 hours for a double. At the end the oven is heated, and you check it before we pack up.
