When John Hebb finished building most of the Packington estate in 1861, the builders who had worked under him held a ceremony to thank him. Packington Street, Dame Street and the south-west side of Ann Street were his; five houses on Essex Road were pulled down after 1856 to open the end of Packington Street.
Packington, rebuilt twice
Later, 12 acres at the south end of Packington Street were cleared for 538 flats in large blocks, after a long fight to have the original houses renovated; Hyde dates the estate to the 1960s. The blocks did not last. In 2004 Islington Council decided to redevelop the estate after finding structural flaws, it passed to the Hyde Group in 2006, and rebuilding with Rydon and Pollard Thomas Edwards began in 2007.
Hyde's figures for the new Packington, beside the Regent's Canal, are 791 homes: 491 at sub-market rates and 300 for outright sale to help pay for them, including 135 houses of three to six bedrooms. The Islington Tribune reported a ribbon-cutting to mark the end of the 12-year project on 20 September 2019. A larger family home may have a double oven or a wide single, and new-build ovens are usually built in.
The older houses on Essex Road
The road itself is older than its name. The stretch from Islington Green to Cross Street was Lower Street, and beyond it ran Lower Road. Britannia Row, between Lower Street and the old Frog Lane, had been laid out by 1773 and later held factories making cut glass and watch springs. Further out, Annett's Crescent (now 246-290 Essex Road) went up in 1819: three-storey stuccoed houses with attics, basements and unusual balconies.
Flats dominate today. In St Mary's & St James' ward, which takes in the south end of Essex Road and the Packington estate, 57.8% of households lived in purpose-built flats at the 2021 Census and 17.8% in terraced houses. 32.1% rented privately, 22.7% from the council and 16.7% from a housing association. When a tenancy ends, the oven is one of the first things on the inventory, and agents can have the invoice in the agency's name, with photos for the checkout file on request.

The price depends on the appliance alone. A single, a double oven or a 90cm range each has one figure, agreed when you call.
Parking at the south end of Essex Road
Two of Islington's parking zones meet at the south end of Essex Road: zone E to the north, taking in Packington Street, and zone B to the south-west, towards the Angel. In the council's zone table both run 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays and 8.30am to 1.30pm on Saturdays, so the hours are the same on either side of the line. Zone E is also on the Arsenal match-day list, though the council's map puts its match-day part further north, round Highbury Corner. Check the signs on your street.

Is a Saturday any different from a weekday?
Not on price: we work seven days a week and weekends cost the weekday price. Saturday parking controls in zones E and B end at 1.30pm.
Where is the oven actually cleaned?
The cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in your kitchen, and the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. A few teams bring a heated tank on the van and use it when they can park close; otherwise everything is done in the kitchen. The price is the same either way, and you can ask when you book.
