Essex Road runs northeast off the corner of Islington Green and does not stop until Balls Pond Road, and along the way the housing changes about four times. Late-19th-century terraces sit south of it, off Cross Street and St Peter's Street. The west side carries council estates, including the Cumming Estate and Peabody blocks finished by 1866.
The estate architecture decides the kitchen
The Marquess Estate is the one that changes our day. Darbourne and Darke designed it for Islington Council between 1966 and 1976, and because it was built as low-rise, high-density housing with terrace houses and small gardens rather than towers, a lot of the homes off Marquess Road have proper house-shaped kitchens with a freestanding cooker in them. The adjoining Channel Islands Estate went high-rise instead, and those flats are typically an integrated single at £77.
Then there are the flats above the Essex Road shops. Small kitchens, hard-worked ovens, and a staircase between us and the van.
Getting the parts to the van
Racks, shelves, trays and side runners lift out and soak in a heated dip tank in the back of the van, so the walk matters. Essex Road itself is a bus road with very little to park on. We use the side streets, Dibden Street, Popham Street, Greenman Street, all controlled parking. If you have a visitor voucher, mention it when you ring.

Essex Road station opened in 1904 and is the only underground station in London run by a rail company rather than the Tube; the trains go to Moorgate, and that commute keeps the one-bed rental market moving. Is there a smell afterwards?
No. The caustic soak stays in the tank in the van. Inside the flat we hand-degrease the cavity, fan cover and door glass with non-caustic products.
Can you do a Saturday?
Yes, we work seven days. Saturdays go first around Islington, so give us a few days.
Does a first-floor flat cost more?
No. Prices are fixed on the phone and there is no call-out fee inside the North and South Circular. Stairs are our problem.
How long will you be in the kitchen?
Ninety minutes or so for a single, about two hours for a double, plus the heat test before we sign it off.
