Highbury Fields covers 11.75 hectares, about 29 acres, and it is the largest open space in Islington. Three terraces face it. John Dawes granted leases between 1774 and 1779 for the 39 houses of Highbury Place, put up by the speculative builder John Spiller, while Highbury Terrace followed with its central section dating to 1789 and numbers 1 to 16 standing by 1794, and Highbury Crescent came later again, begun in 1844.

Highbury Terrace went up as single homes and was divided into apartments after the Second World War. That subdivision is what decides the job. The kitchen ends up in what was once a bedroom or a back parlour, one flight or three flights up, usually with the original staircase and no lift. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners come out to the heated dip tank in the van, so the parts travel and the caustic stays outside. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products, and there is no chemical smell afterwards.
Grade II listing keeps the old kitchens where they are
The houses around the Fields are Grade II listed and sit inside the Highbury Fields conservation area, and Islington runs one of the stricter regimes in London on windows, basements and rear extensions. Owners work with what is already there. Where a ground-floor flat has kept the full back room, a range or a double oven at £110 is the usual find; the upper conversions are almost always a single.

No. Prices are fixed on the phone, and carrying the racks down is our problem rather than yours.
Does anything get drilled or fixed to the kitchen?
No. The parts lift out and the rest is hand work. Nothing is done to the fabric of the room.
Can you do the hob and the extractor too?
Yes. A hob is £23–28 depending on type, an extractor hood £28, both quoted before we start.
Are you insured?
Yes, insured and DBS-checked, which matters if you are handing keys to an agent.
