Duncan Terrace began as New Terrace, which the architect James Taylor started on the west bank of the New River in 1791 and had finished by 1794; its first part is now 50-58 Duncan Terrace.
Terraces where the New River ran
The rest of Duncan Terrace followed: probably nos 1-10 by 1817, and the run to Duncan Street by 1839. On the far side of the old river, the houses first called Colebrooke Row were said to date from 1768: three storeys with attics and Doric doorcases. Islington's guidelines for the Duncan Terrace and Colebrooke Row conservation area describe late Georgian and early Victorian terraces, with a section of the New River Walk and the Regent's Canal coming out of the Islington Tunnel at Vincent Terrace.
Where one of these houses has been divided into flats, the kitchen is usually small, with a built-in single or a 60cm cooker, and it may be two or three floors up a shared stair.
Renting round the Angel
The Angel junction, Duncan Terrace and Camden Passage all fall in St Peter's & Canalside ward. At the 2021 Census, 70.1% of its 5,472 households lived in purpose-built flats. 32.0% rented privately, 26.1% rented from the council, 14.6% from a housing association and 3.8% were in shared ownership.
With nearly a third of the ward letting privately, there is a steady flow of move-outs, and the oven is one of the first things an inventory clerk opens. Newer flats are mixed in. Further up Upper Street, at number 116, the old Royal Mail sorting office, four Edwardian red-brick buildings, became Islington Square, finished in August 2020 with 260 homes and 108 serviced apartments.

Market days and parking zones A and B
Chapel Market trades from 9am to 6pm Tuesday to Saturday and from 8.30am to 4pm on Sundays, when the Islington Farmers Market is held there too. The Camden Passage market's main days are Wednesday and Saturday, from 8am to around 5pm. Neither is a place to park a van while the stalls are out.
On Islington's zone map, the streets north of Pentonville Road and City Road, Chapel Market and Duncan Terrace included, are zone B; the EC1 side, round Myddelton Square and St John Street, is zone A. The council's zone table gives both 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays and 8.30am to 1.30pm on Saturdays. Pentonville Road, City Road and Upper Street are shown as red routes.
