HM Prison Holloway closed in July 2016, and its 10-acre site off Parkhurst Road is being rebuilt by Peabody as Holloway Park: 985 homes, 60% of them affordable, with a park and a Women's Building.
From prison to Holloway Park
The prison began as the City of London's house of correction. The Victoria County History records that it was built between 1849 and 1852 on 8 acres of land the Corporation held north of Camden Road, to a design by J. B. Bunning with a gateway copied from Warwick Castle. It held only women from about 1903, and from 1972 it was rebuilt over several years, losing the gateway despite protests. In the 1970s the Corporation also rebuilt its estate between Parkhurst and Camden roads.
Peabody bought the site in 2019, and Islington's planning committee approved the scheme on 8 March 2022. In October 2025 the first phase reached topping out with 215 homes for social rent, which are expected to be ready for local families by 2027. Newly built flats normally come with a fitted kitchen and a built-in oven, and a built-in single is priced and cleaned like any other single: racks, trays and side runners soaked and cleaned separately, the cavity, fan cover and door glass by hand indoors.
Most Holloway households live in flats
Holloway ward, which takes in the prison site and the west side of the Nag's Head, had 5,365 households at the 2021 Census. 67.8% lived in a purpose-built block of flats, against 57.4% across Islington. 43.2% rented from a social landlord, and almost half of those, 21.1% of all households, from a housing association or similar body; the Islington figure for housing associations was 15.2%. A further 31.5% rented privately.
In a block, tell us the floor and whether there is a lift. A single takes about 90 minutes on site whichever floor it is on. Further north on the main road, near Tollington Way, the Royal Northern Hospital stood from 1888 until it closed in 1992; it was pulled down in the mid-1990s for flats, and Royal Northern Gardens in Manor Gardens now marks the site.

Parking zones F, Y and U

- Empire Square, Manor Gardens and the blocks at 560 Holloway Road: 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays, 8.30am to 1.30pm on Saturdays
- Zone Y, Holloway East
- Prospect Place, by the prison site: the same hours
- Zone U, Junction South
- Manor Mansions at 455 Holloway Road, on the other side of the main road: 10am to noon on weekdays only
Zones F and Y also have Emirates event hours, when Arsenal play at home or a big show is on: to 8.30pm on weekdays, to 4.30pm on Saturdays, and noon to 4.30pm on Sundays and bank holidays. The council's zone table lists every zone; the sign on the bay is the final word.

Is a Sunday visit easier for parking?
Usually. None of these three zones is controlled on a Sunday unless there is an event at the Emirates, and a Sunday visit costs the same as a weekday one.

Yes. A gas hob is £28, a ceramic one £23 and an extractor hood £28, each on top of the oven price.
