The office block that went up over Archway station in the 1970s is now Vantage Point, 118 rented flats, and each one has an integrated Bosch oven and hob.
Archway Tower, now flats over the station
The tower was part of a big clearance on the west side of Highgate Hill. The Victoria County History lists what the clearance brought: new blocks for the Whittington Hospital, housing on the cleared ground south of it down to Junction Road, and a large office block, shops and a new Underground station at the corner of Junction Road and Highgate Hill. Archway Tower was later converted to homes, and Essential Living now lets it as studios and one- and two-bedroom flats, with a lift to every floor.
An integrated oven is built into the kitchen units, and a built-in single is priced as a single. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen. Dust sheets go down first. A single takes about 90 minutes on site.
Whitehall Park's 1890s houses
East of Archway Road, around Whitehall Park, the housing is older and larger. The Victoria County History calls Whitehall Park the latest estate in this part of Islington. R. W. Hill designed it, building began in 1889, and Whitehall Park and Gladsmuir Road were finished in 1891, Cressida Road in 1892 and Harberton Road in 1893. Islington's design guidelines for the conservation area describe the grandest of them as three-storey red-brick terraces with slate mansard roofs and turrets on the end houses. The old house called Whitehall was not sold for building until 1910, and many houses on its land date from between the wars; the guidelines name the 1920s semi-detached houses of Fitzwarren Gardens as good examples.
The 2021 Census shows the difference. In the area the House of Commons Library names Archway East, which takes in Whitehall Park, 22.4% of households had a terraced house to themselves. In Archway West, around the station, Vantage Point and the Whittington, the figure was 10.1%; there 58.2% of households lived in purpose-built flats and 43.8% rented from the council or a housing association.

Four parking zones within a few streets
Islington's zone map puts the streets within a short walk of the junction in four different zones, with very different hours:
- Zone P, Archway
- the station and Vantage Point on Junction Road: 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays, 8.30am to 1.30pm on Saturdays
- Zone K, Whittington
- the hospital site and the Highgate Hill streets beside it, such as Despard Road and Waterlow Road: controlled 24 hours a day, every day
- Zone Z, Hillrise West
- Gladsmuir Road, Cardinals Way, Hazellville Road: 10am to 2pm on weekdays
- Zone HE, Hillrise East
- Highcroft Road off Hornsey Rise: 10am to 2pm on weekdays
The council's zone table has the full list. In zones Z and HE a visit that starts after 2pm on a weekday is outside the controls. Sundays are uncontrolled in all of them except K, and a weekend visit costs the same as a weekday one. Signs on the street are what count on the day, so give us the street when you call.

Is my street Islington, Haringey or Camden?
Most of Archway is Islington. Hornsey Lane is the line with Haringey, so the N6 streets north of it, such as Stanhope Road, are Haringey's; west of Dartmouth Park Hill, Balmore Street is Camden. Each council runs its own parking zones, so the rules change at the border.
Can the oven be cleaned before I hand back a rented flat?

Is parking a problem at the Whittington end of Archway?
The streets around the hospital are zone K, controlled around the clock, so there is no free hour to aim for, and Archway Road itself is a red route on the council's zone map. The team needs a bay close by, so give us the address when you call.
Does the hob cost extra?
Yes. A ceramic hob is £23 and a gas hob £28, cleaned at the same visit as the oven.
