Where people live in the Square Mile
Many of them live on a handful of estates. The City's own population tables name the residential areas: the west of the Barbican (Aldersgate ward), the east of the Barbican and the Golden Lane Estate (Cripplegate), the Mansell Street and Middlesex Street estates (Portsoken), and a looser group of homes around Queenhithe and Carter Lane.
The Barbican was begun in 1965 and took 11 years to build. It has more than 2,060 flats and over 4,000 residents, and was listed Grade II in September 2001. Golden Lane, just to the north, came first: built between 1953 and 1962, it has more than 500 flats and was listed in 1997, with Crescent House at Grade II*. Near Aldgate, the Middlesex Street Estate (1968 to 1972) is Petticoat Tower, 88 flats over 23 floors, and the 146 homes of Petticoat Square.
Nearly every oven here is in a flat. In a tower, tell us the floor and whether the lift works. On a podium estate the walk from the front door to the nearest place a van can stop may be long, so allow a few extra minutes.

Renting in the City
Nearly half of City households (48.3%) rented privately in 2021: 2,373 households, against 1,573 in 2011. Another 36.5% owned their home, most of them outright, and 14.9% rented from a social landlord. Between lets, the invoice can be addressed to the letting agency, photos taken for the checkout file and keys collected from an empty flat by arrangement.
Parking in the City's controlled zone
The City runs one controlled parking zone. Its standard hours on the Corporation's parking page are 7am to 7pm, Monday to Friday, and 7am to 11am on Saturday, with a time plate on a wall or post wherever different hours apply. Is a Saturday visit possible?
Yes, at the weekday price. Standard controls end at 11am on Saturdays, so an afternoon start makes the van easier to park.
How long does a double oven take?
About two hours, and a single about 90 minutes. Allow a little longer if the van has to stop some way from the block.
What do you do inside a small flat?
