The Finsbury Estate is 451 homes in four blocks, designed by Emberton, Franck and Tardrew in 1965 for Finsbury Borough Council and finished after Finsbury had been folded into Islington. Michael Cliffe House alone stacks 185 flats up 25 storeys. Patrick Coman House holds 143 over nine, Charles Townsend House has 52 across four, and Joseph Trotter Close is 15 ground-floor maisonettes built for large families. The entrances are on St John Street, by Finsbury Library and the Islington Museum, and on Skinner Street to the south-west.
Most jobs here start with a lift
Over two-thirds of the estate's flats sit in the two towers, so the racks, shelves, trays and side runners go down to the van and come back up clean while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen with non-caustic products. That is the whole point of keeping the heated tank in the van rather than the sink. A single oven clean is £77 and takes about ninety minutes, whichever floor you are on.
Mid-sixties kitchens, mostly one oven
Flats built in 1965 were laid out around a 60cm cooker, and even where kitchens have been refitted the gap it goes in has not moved, so a single oven or a slot-in double is what turns up rather than a range. Clerkenwell around the estate is a different market again, full of converted workshops and warehouse flats let privately, which is where the end-of-tenancy work comes from.

Parking around Skinner Street
EC1R is inside the Congestion Charge zone, since the northern edge of it runs along Pentonville Road a few hundred metres up the hill, and it is inside the ULEZ as well. Islington's central zones include streets controlled 24 hours a day. None of it touches the price. No call-out fee inside the North and South Circular.
Questions from the estate
Will you need my parking space?
No. A street bay is fine, and a dip-tank van is too tall for most underground car parks anyway.
How dirty is too dirty?
Not a thing. The tank does the heavy work off the racks and trays, however long it has been.
Is the oven usable straight after?
Yes. It gets heat-tested and signed off before we leave, and there is no chemical smell to air out first.
Can you do the hob at the same time?
£23–28 depending on what it is. Gas burners and caps lift out and go in the tank with everything else.
