The Finsbury Estate was the last big housing scheme started by Finsbury Borough Council. Emberton, Franck & Tardrew designed it and Tersons built it between 1964 and 1968, so most of the work was done after Finsbury became part of the new London Borough of Islington in 1965.
Four blocks off Skinner Street
The estate replaced a tangle of small early 19th-century streets owned by the Skinners' Company, along with the old Finsbury Public Library, which was pulled down in 1967; the new Finsbury Library faces St John Street. As finished, the estate had 451 homes in four blocks, each named after a member of the old borough council:
- Michael Cliffe House, the 24-storey tower (cut from 25 after LCC objections), with one- to three-bedroom flats
- Patrick Coman House, a nine-storey slab along St John Street, with two- and three-bedroom flats
- Joseph Trotter Close, four-storey ranges on Myddelton Street and Gloucester Way, including four-bedroom maisonettes
- Charles Townsend House, a four-storey range to the south, mostly bedsits and one-bedroom flats
In the two tall blocks the staircases and lifts form the structural cores, so the walls between rooms were made light enough to move. In the tower, the racks, trays and side runners are taken out and soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the flat.
The small Census area (Islington 022E) that holds Michael Cliffe, Patrick Coman and Charles Townsend Houses had 560 households in 2021. 63.0% of them rented from the council and 85.2% lived in a purpose-built block of flats.
Spa Green, just to the north
Just north, between Rosebery Avenue and St John Street, is the older Spa Green estate by Berthold Lubetkin's Tecton. Aneurin Bevan laid its foundation stone on 26 July 1946 and Herbert Morrison opened it on 29 April 1949. It has 126 flats, most of them in Wells House and Tunbridge House, two eight-storey slabs facing each other across a courtyard, with the four-storey Sadler House, twisting in plan, to the north. The kitchens sit on the outer side of the slabs with a deep hatch through to the living room. When the estate was refurbished in 2006-7, kitchens in the council-rented flats were upgraded and the surviving original sinks and Garchey waste units kept.

Parking in zone A
On Islington's zone map, the estate and Spa Green are in zone A, which the council's zone table controls from 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays and 8.30am to 1.30pm on Saturdays. Zone C, controlled 24 hours a day from Monday to Saturday, starts a few streets east, beyond Goswell Road. The map is a guide only, so read the signs where the van stops.

Saturday afternoon or Sunday, when zone A has no controls. Weekends cost the weekday price.
