The junction of Hornsey Road and Holloway Road was known as Ring Cross by 1494, and the name only fell out of use in the 1820s, when people started calling the area Lower Holloway.
Lower Holloway on the old parish map
The Victoria County History draws Lower Holloway as the ground between Camden Road, the old parish boundary to the west and the North London line, plus the houses on the north-east side of Holloway Road at Ring Cross. By 1805 building along that side of the road had joined Ring Cross to Lower Holloway. Around 1800 George Pocock built a few small streets on the south-west side of Ring Cross, on land belonging to Lord Northampton; one of them, George's Place, is now George's Road. The Ring Cross estate's 1920s blocks
The London County Council rebuilt two of the worse areas of Lower Holloway, Brand Street and George's Road, as the Ring Cross estate, completed in 1928. At Brand Street it put up Branston and Rollit houses, with shops facing Hornsey Road, for 292 people, and laid out Rollit Street in place of the old street. The north side of George's Road, round Hartnoll Street, was rebuilt in 1929 with Radford House, five-storey blocks holding 111 flats, and the four-storey Hartnoll House, with 24 flats for cheaper letting to tenants from slum housing.
Hartnoll House is still an address on Hartnoll Street. The ONS area that takes in George's Road, Hartnoll Street, Eastwood Close and Wells Yard (Islington 011E) had 422 households in 2021. 70.4% of them lived in a purpose-built block of flats, and 49.9% rented from a social landlord, a third of all households (33.5%) from the council itself. Another 27.1% rented privately.
Interwar council flats were usually built as walk-ups, with modest kitchens. Today that tends to mean a 60cm freestanding cooker or a built-in single put in at a later refit, and sometimes several flights of stairs between it and the street. Mention the floor when you call. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen. Zone N parking on George's Road and Holloway Road
The council's postcode lookup gives the same answer for Holloway Road by Wells Yard, George's Road, Hartnoll Street and Eastwood Close: zone N. Bays there need a permit, a voucher or payment from 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays and from 8.30am to 1.30pm on Saturdays. Zone N is also one of the nine zones with extra hours when the Emirates has a match or a big event; then weekdays run to 8.30pm, Saturdays to 4.30pm, and Sundays are controlled from noon to 4.30pm.
Estate car parks are a separate matter. The council's parking page says estate parking has its own controls, and a visitor may need an estate visitor permit or voucher. If your block has its own parking, say so when you book, and have a permit ready if one is needed.

Lower Holloway oven cleaning questions
My flat is several floors up with no lift. Is that a problem?
No. Mention the floor when you call so the visit is timed properly; a single oven takes about 90 minutes and a double about two hours.
My cooker is freestanding with a grill above the oven. Is the grill cleaned too?
Yes. The grill pan and its rack are soaked and cleaned separately with the oven racks, and the grill compartment is degreased by hand with the rest of the cooker.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, at the weekday price. In zone N the Saturday controls end at 1.30pm unless there is an event at the Emirates, so an afternoon slot is the easier one for parking.
Can the hob be done at the same visit?
Yes: a gas hob is £28 and a ceramic hob £23, added to the oven price.
