Most Clerkenwell kitchens sit in a converted warehouse. The old print works, watchmaking factories and cold stores off St John Street and Britton Street were turned into flats decades ago, and the layout that came with them is nearly always the same: one big open-plan room, four-metre ceilings, and a handleless integrated single oven built into an island or a run of units. Parking and getting the racks to the van
Every street in Islington is a controlled parking zone, and Clerkenwell is inside central London ULEZ, so where the van goes is planned before we set off, given that we carry the shelves and racks out to the tank and back. Exmouth Market itself is part-pedestrian, and Leather Lane runs a lunchtime street market, so we load on the quieter side streets rather than fight the market for a kerb. Near Farringdon, where the Elizabeth line brought a lot more foot traffic, an earlier slot is usually the smoother one.
