Milner Square was started in 1827, but the houses on its east side were not leased until 1840 and the west side was only finished in the 1850s; one house there took 13 years to get from agreement to lease.
Barnsbury Street's two unusual squares
Milner Square is attributed to Roumieu and Gough. Its four-storey fronts have tall, narrow windows and strong vertical lines, and it has been described as architecture "of the most sinister description". A few minutes west, the Drapers' Company estate was laid out from 1839: Richard Carpenter took a building lease of most of Lonsdale Square, and his son R. C. Carpenter, a church architect, designed it. Nos. 28 to 62 and 73 to 111 Barnsbury Street were ready first, in 1840, and the square was finished in 1845, three-storey houses over basements with sharply gabled attics and Tudor-style doorways. Its leases required each house to be lived in by one family.
Islington's guidelines call Barnsbury its largest conservation area and name Lonsdale, Gibson and Thornhill squares among the finest in London; Thornhill Square was being laid out in 1848, and St Andrew's church at the centre of its crescent was finished in 1854. Many of these houses are now flats. In the ONS area round Milner Square, Barnsbury Street and this stretch of Liverpool Road (Islington 017E), 34.5% of the 881 households in 2021 lived in part of a converted or shared house and 18.2% in a whole terraced house.
A house built over a basement was designed with its kitchen below the street. Converted, it tends to give a garden flat that still cooks downstairs and upper flats with a kitchen made out of a back room, often with a built-in single. In a house still in one piece the kitchen may have moved up to the ground floor and grown, with room for a double oven or a range.
Barnsbury since the 1960s
The Barnsbury Association was formed in 1964 by new middle-class residents, and when the conservation area was created in 1965 its scheme to close much of the area to through traffic came in with it. Prices rose fast: in 1972 the average house cost more than three times the 1966 figure. Tenants in furnished rooms came under pressure to leave. In 1973 one property company sold its holdings to Islington council, which spent the next four years buying and renovating houses for the tenants already in them.
The mix is still there in the Census. In Islington 017E in 2021, 39.1% of households rented privately, 33.6% owned their home and 27.2% rented from a social landlord. The council's postcode lookup puts Milner Square, Barnsbury Street and Liverpool Road at this point in zone E, controlled from 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays and 8.30am to 1.30pm on Saturdays. The council's Emirates page lists zone E among the match-day zones, yet the lookup returns no match-day hours for these addresses while Haven Mews, a few doors away, comes back with them, so check the sign on the bay before a visit on an Emirates event day. Sundays are uncontrolled.
