The building agreement for Canonbury Square was made in 1805, and Henry Leroux let plots on its north side in 1808. He went bankrupt in 1809, and agreements for the south and east sides came only in 1821.
Villas beside the New River
Canonbury Tower, in Canonbury Place, is far older: listed Grade II*, it was rebuilt in the early 1500s and again late in that century by Sir John Spencer. The streets around it were built up from the 1820s to the 1860s. In the 1840s Canonbury Park North and South were laid out with semi-detached villas, whose gardens on the south side stretched to the New River. The earliest houses on James Wagstaff's land, 2 and 4 Alwyne Villas, were 'cottage villas' leased to him in 1848.
The council's design guidelines for the Canonbury conservation area say semi-detached mid-Victorian villas predominate in many streets, with large gardens and mature trees, and that the New River Walk is an important feature. Some of the houses have front basement areas behind cast iron railings. A villa kept as one house has room for a big family cooker; split into flats, it usually has a built-in single in each kitchen.

East Canonbury's council estates
After the Second World War the council built across east Canonbury. Sickert Court, with 238 dwellings, went up on the site of Quadrant Road, and the Douglas estate between Clephane and Douglas roads had 239 by 1959. The biggest scheme was the Marquess estate: 28 acres taking in Douglas, Marquess and Clephane roads, designed by Darbourne & Darke and finished in 1976. It has 1,200 flats and maisonettes in dark red brick, around part of the New River Walk. The ground-floor maisonettes have their own gardens and the upper levels are reached by a ramp.
Canonbury ward takes in Canonbury Place, Canonbury Park and the Marquess estate; the square itself is in the next ward, Laycock. At the 2021 Census, 34.9% of the ward's 5,867 households rented from the council and 55.5% lived in purpose-built flats. Flats of that kind usually have a 60cm cooker in a small galley kitchen.

Each appliance has its own fixed price, so a built-in single in a converted flat and a range in a whole villa are quoted separately, on the phone, before the visit.
Parking in zones E, L and T, and on match days
On Islington's zone map, the streets round Canonbury Square and Compton Terrace are in zone E and the area east of Alwyne Villas, around Canonbury Park, is zone L. Both are controlled 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays and 8.30am to 1.30pm on Saturdays. They are also two of the nine zones with extra match-day hours for Arsenal home games: 6.30pm to 8.30pm on weekdays, 1.30pm to 4.30pm on Saturdays and noon to 4.30pm on Sundays. On the map the Marquess estate straddles the line between zone L and zone T; T has the same weekday and Saturday hours but is not on the match-day list. No. It needs a night to cool, so switch it off the evening before the visit.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
