Mildmay Grove North and Mildmay Grove South were laid out on either side of the North London railway line, which was completed through the district in 1850, and Mildmay Grove was built up in the 1860s with three-storey stuccoed terraces with porticos and basements.
The Mildmay estate's stucco terraces
The streets stand on the old Mildmay estate, which lay mainly south and south-east of Newington Green and was sold in lots in 1859. By the mid 1850s Mildmay Park, from the green down to Ball's Pond Road, was already lined with pairs of large stuccoed houses of three storeys over basements, with side porches. Most of the rest went up in the 1860s. The houses were built for middle-class families, and in 1880 a station opened on the east side of Mildmay Park for them; it closed in 1934, by which time most residents worked locally.
From the 1970s the council turned more to repairing the old houses than to rebuilding. Housing action areas were declared either side of Newington Green Road, and many of the three-storey terraces there became flats. In 2021, around Mildmay Grove South (Islington LSOA 012A), 373 of the 763 households, or 48.9%, lived in part of a converted or shared house.
A house split that way may have a kitchen in the basement and others on the floors above. The method suits it. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen.
Council flats on the bomb sites
Bomb damage in the Second World War cleared space for council housing. The London County Council began its Mayville estate between 1947 and 1952 with blocks on Matthias Road and Boleyn Road, and in the 1960s added blocks including the twelve-storey Conrad House; the estate had 352 homes by 1967. On a bombed site in Kingsbury Road the LCC built the four-storey blocks of Kerridge Court between 1947 and 1952, and later the thirteen-storey Haliday House went up near Mildmay Park. In the census area around Mildmay Road and Kingsbury Road (Islington LSOA 012B), 80.5% of households lived in purpose-built flats in 2021 and 52.3% rented from the council.
