Flats in the old Highbury stands
When the club moved to the Emirates in 2006, the ground was rebuilt as Highbury Square, designed by Allies and Morrison and finished around 2010. The North Bank and the Clock End were knocked down for new blocks, the East and West Stands were kept and converted, and the pitch became a garden the flats look onto. Historic England first listed the East Stand on 16 July 1997.
Flats of that date normally have a built-in oven in a fitted kitchen, sometimes with a pyrolytic cleaning setting. A hand clean works on either: racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, over dust sheets.
Terraces around Gillespie Road
The stadium went onto the playing fields of St John's Hall, a divinity college, part of whose grounds were leased to Woolwich Arsenal in 1913. By then the streets around it were built. The Victoria County History records that by the mid 1890s the last land north of Gillespie Road had been filled with small streets of terraces, and that the big houses on roads such as Highbury Hill, still single-family homes before 1914, had mostly been divided up or taken by schools and institutions by 1930. It also notes that the crowds the club drew had a depressing effect on nearby housing.
In 2021 the census area the House of Commons Library calls Gillespie Road, which takes in the station, Avenell Road and Highbury Square, had nearly 4,000 households. 28.8% lived in a terraced house, 20.5% in part of a converted house and 6.2% in a flat made out of another kind of building, such as a former school, church or warehouse, about twice the Islington share of 3.1%. 38.3% owned their home and 34.3% rented privately.

Zone G, and what changes on match days
Highbury Stadium Square, Gillespie Road from no. 108 and Avenell Road from no. 75 are in Islington's Gillespie zone, G. On an ordinary weekday it is controlled from 10am to 2pm and not at all at weekends. A few doors away the zone changes: Gillespie Road no. 100 and Avenell Road nos. 53 to 67 are in Finsbury Park zone H, controlled from 8.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Saturday. When Arsenal's men or women play at home, or there is a big show at the Emirates, the council's match-day rules run zone G from 10am to 8.30pm on weekdays and from noon to 4.30pm on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays; zone H runs to 8.30pm on weekdays and from noon to 4.30pm on Sundays and bank holidays. Signs go up as much as three days before, some bays are suspended and some roads close. Can you come on a match day?
Yes. Tell us the date when you book, because zone G is controlled for most of the day and bays near the ground may be suspended. A day with no fixture is easier for the van.
When is parking easiest around Highbury Square?
Outside 10am to 2pm on a weekday with no event, and all weekend when nothing is on at the Emirates. Weekend visits cost the same as weekdays.
Why is the station called Arsenal?
It opened as Gillespie Road on 15 December 1906 and was renamed Arsenal (Highbury Hill) on 31 October 1932, after the club; the suffix was dropped later.
