The name Pentonville seems to have been coined around 1787 for the new suburb on the land of Henry Penton, MP. Penton Street, the first street laid out, follows an old footpath that led past bowling greens to the White Conduit House.
Pentonville is the road, not the prison
The Survey of London calls the prison's name a misnomer: Pentonville Prison stands some distance north, on Caledonian Road. Pentonville today is the ground alongside Pentonville Road, between King's Cross and the Angel, with its heart on the north side of the road. Its late Georgian houses became lodgings, tenements and workshops in Victorian times, and after the Second World War many of the terraces on the western slopes were swept away for estates.
Priory Green's gallery blocks
The largest is Priory Green, designed under Berthold Lubetkin by Tecton, planned in 1937 and built between 1948 and 1958 on the site of Busaco Street. The core of about 279 flats is reached by open access galleries. The blocks are named after priors of the Hospitallers who once owned the land: Kendal and Redington Houses are the eight-storey ranges, with Foliot, Tornay, Paveley and Grendon Houses running east to west. Across Collier Street, the Priors estate of 1970-4 added 113 homes in red brick. In 1999 Pentonville's public housing passed to the Peabody Trust.

Renting in Pentonville
The Census area that the House of Commons Library calls Pentonville (Islington 021) takes in Penton Street, White Lion Street and Amwell Street; Priory Green is in the next area west, which the Library calls Barnsbury West. Pentonville had 3,605 households in 2021. 36.6% rented privately, 23.0% from the council and 13.9% from a housing association, and just 8.6% lived in a house of their own. The Survey of London adds that since 1997 private housing has returned, with student blocks on Penton Rise (just over the borough line in Camden) and in the converted King's Cross House.

Parking either side of Pentonville Road
Pentonville Road and King's Cross Road are red routes on Islington's zone map, so the van cannot wait on them. North of Pentonville Road the side streets are zone B; south of it, towards Amwell Street and the Finsbury estate, they are zone A. The council's zone table gives both 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays and 8.30am to 1.30pm on Saturdays. The council says its map is only a guide, so check the signs on your street.
