St Luke's, now in Islington, was made a parish out of St Giles Cripplegate in 1733, the date of its church on Old Street, designed by John James and Nicholas Hawksmoor. In 1900 it became part of the Metropolitan Borough of Finsbury, with Clerkenwell and three smaller places, and in 1965 Finsbury was merged with Islington.
St Luke's, the Old Street end of Finsbury
Islington's design guidelines for the St Luke's conservation area call it an important surviving part of historic Finsbury. Whitecross Street, in Islington, began as a medieval lane from Cripplegate to Old Street, with 18th and 19th century houses of domestic scale along it, and its market still trades between Old Street and Fortune Street: 11am to 2pm from Monday to Thursday, 9am to 6pm on Fridays. The church closed in 1959, when its structure was found to be unsafe, and has since been restored as the London Symphony Orchestra's rehearsal, concert and education centre, with the obelisk spire still the local landmark.
Peabody blocks off Whitecross Street
In Islington's St Luke's the side streets hold one of the largest late-Victorian Peabody estates. Roscoe Street, Errol Street, Cahill Street and Dufferin Avenue are thought to take their names from trustees of the Peabody Donation Fund, which redeveloped the slum streets here in the 1880s. The Roscoe Street estate opened in 1883 with eleven blocks. An air raid in December 1940 burnt out six of them and two more were badly damaged in 1941; the first 13-storey replacements went up in 1957, and Banner House followed in 1972 on the ground of the last Victorian blocks.
Islington's Bunhill ward, which covers St Luke's and the streets round Old Street, had 5,069 households at the 2021 Census. 44.4% rented from a social landlord (26.3% from the council, 18.1% from a housing association or another social landlord), 33.0% rented privately, 20.8% owned and 1.6% were in shared ownership.
Kitchens in older estate flats are often narrow, with a built-in single oven or a 60cm freestanding cooker in the gap between units. On a high floor, mention the floor when you book. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the flat, over dust sheets.

Parking on Old Street's two sides
East of the roundabout, Old Street is the boundary between two boroughs. The north side is Hackney, in its zone A (Wenlock), controlled from 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays. The south side is Islington's zone C, as is Whitecross Street to the west; the council's zone finder shows as controlled 24 hours a day from Monday to Saturday and until 6am on Sunday. Estate car parks have their own rules, and Islington says a visitor may need an estate permit or voucher, so check with your estate office before the day. Which day is easiest for parking on the Islington side?
Sunday after 6am, when zone C is not controlled. A Sunday visit costs the same as a weekday one.
I live in a Peabody block. Do I need to sort out a parking permit?
Ask the estate office whether its car park takes visitors and how. If it does not, Islington says a bay on the street needs a permit, a visitor voucher or payment in a short-stay bay during zone hours; tell us the street when you book.
Can the extractor hood be cleaned at the same time?
Yes, at £28 on top of the oven. A single oven, hob and extractor together are £117.
How long does a double oven take?
About two hours, finishing with the oven heated and checked by you before we pack up.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
