Building in Tufnell Park started around St George's church and was extended along Carleton Road. By 1886 Carleton Road was lined with detached and semi-detached houses, while open ground remained in Anson, Hugo and Dalmeny roads.
Truefitt's villas, split into flats
Most of those streets now sit in the Tufnell Park conservation area, one of 42 in Islington. The council's design guidelines describe an estate laid out in the 1860s and 1870s: spacious detached and semi-detached villas, plus terraces of three and four storeys, many designed by George Truefitt, then the estate's surveyor. The guidelines single out the sloping chimney stacks on the backs of the terraces in Archibald Road, Dalmeny Road, Huddleston Road and St George's Avenue.
At the 2021 Census, 34.0% of households in Islington's Tufnell Park ward lived in part of a converted or shared house, against 21.3% across the borough, and only 15.8% had a whole house to themselves. Council flats off Camden Road
Not all of Tufnell Park is villa streets. The London County Council planned estates on Tufnell Park Road and Hilldrop Road in 1936, though they were probably not finished until about 1950. Around 1948 the borough council cleared the houses where Anson, Carleton and Brecknock roads meet, and in the 1950s built the Brecknock Road estate, 226 homes. In the 1970s the GLC and Islington added to their Hilldrop estates on the north side of Camden Road. One of them, Margaret Bondfield House, stands where the semi-detached house of Dr Crippen once stood in Hilldrop Crescent.

Parking in zones R and W
On Islington's parking zone map, the Tufnell Park streets north of Camden Road fall in zones R and W. Both are controlled 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays, with no weekend hours in the council's zone table. Camden Road itself is a TfL red route, so the van needs a bay on a side street. The council calls its map a guide only; the signs on your street are what count.

Yes. Tufnell Park runs over the borough line into Camden, towards Kentish Town, and the price is set by the oven whichever borough you are in. Parking there follows Camden's rules, so give us the street name when you book.
Can I book a Saturday?
Yes. We work seven days a week and weekends cost the weekday price. Zones R and W have no weekend controls in the council's table, so a weekend slot avoids permit hours there.
My flat is the top floor of a converted villa. Does that change anything?
The method stays the same, so mention the floor when you call.
Does the oven need to be cold when you arrive?
Cool, yes, so switch it off in good time. We also need a working socket.
