In 1927 Metropolitan Railway Country Estates bought land north of Rayners Lane station, and E.S. Reid built Harrow Garden Village on it to garden-suburb lines. Around 1930 T.F. Nash bought Tithe Farm, south of the Piccadilly line, and covered it with cheap, mostly terraced houses; in 1933 he put up a 35-foot illuminated wooden arch across Alexandra Avenue to sell them. At the 2021 Census 49.0% of households in Rayners Lane ward lived in a terraced house, the highest share of any Harrow ward.

Harrow's semis, ward by ward

Harrow took roughly its present shape in 1934, when Wealdstone, Harrow Weald, Pinner, Great Stanmore and Little Stanmore were joined to it, and much of its housing dates from the 1920s to the 1940s. The 2021 Census counted 89,642 households: 37.1% lived in a semi-detached house, 26.2% in a purpose-built block of flats, 16.9% in a terraced house and 11.3% in a detached house. Some wards are nearly all semis. In Belmont 70.3% of households lived in one, in Kenton West 64.7% and in Centenary 59.6%.

Many Harrow households own their home outright. In 2021, 30.1% of households owned their home outright, slightly more than the 28.7% paying off a mortgage, and outright ownership usually comes later in life. In a semi in Belmont or Kenton the cooker may be a freestanding one that has stood in the same gap for years. Detached houses in Hatch End, Pinner and Stanmore

The north of the borough has more room. At the 2021 Census 34.2% of households in Hatch End ward lived in a detached house, 29.1% in Pinner and 26.2% in Stanmore, against 11.3% across Harrow. Large detached kitchens are the likeliest place for a 90cm range cooker or an AGA.

Harrow's parking zones, many controlled for an hour

The council's parking map shows 74 controlled zones, and 41 of them are controlled for between one and five hours a day. Some examples from the map:

  • Rayners Lane (L): 10am to 11am, Monday to Friday
  • Pinner (A): 11am to noon, Monday to Friday
  • West Harrow (W): 10am to 11am, Monday to Friday
  • Harrow Town Centre (E): 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday
  • Wealdstone (C1): 8am to midnight, every day

In a one-hour zone, a visit that starts after the listed hour should find the controls off, though the signs on the street are what count. In the town centre or Wealdstone the van may need a paid bay or a visitor permit. Some housing estate car parks in Harrow are permit-only as well, so if you live on an estate, tell us where the van can stand. The council's CPZ page has the map with every zone's hours.

Flats and private lets around Harrow town centre

The town centre is where Harrow's houses give way to flats. In Greenhill ward, around Harrow town centre, 69.0% of households lived in a purpose-built block of flats in 2021 and 47.5% rented privately; across the borough, private renting was 29.6%. A newer flat usually has a built-in single, often under the worktop, and about 90 minutes covers it.

My road in Rayners Lane is in zone L. What time should you come?

Any time after 11am on a weekday, because the council's map gives zone L as 10am to 11am, Monday to Friday. A Saturday or Sunday visit falls outside those hours and costs the same.

Is an AGA in Pinner priced the same as one in Stanmore?

Yes. A two-oven AGA is £143 anywhere in Harrow, and it needs to be off and cool before we start.

What happens on the day in a Harrow house?

Dust sheets go down before anything comes out. The racks and trays are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors.

How much notice do I need to give if I have to cancel?
