Eighty-five acres of the old Canons land were sold to a builder named George Cross in 1926, and the estate he laid out kept the mature trees and the two lakes the first Duke of Chandos had put there two centuries earlier. Around 320 houses went up through the 1930s. James Brydges bought the ground in 1713 and had Alexander Blackwell lay out the park, which Humphry Repton reworked later, so the trees the houses were fitted around were already old when the first foundations went in.

Surplus Land (Canons) Ltd still owns the gate piers at the entrance to Canons Drive, the house-side verges and the redwoods that line it. We keep off the verges and use the carriageway.
Big houses tend to mean big cookers
The stock here is large detached housing on generous plots rather than the terraced or semi-detached pattern that dominates most of HA8, and kitchens that size are where a 90cm range or a two-oven AGA turns up instead of a single under a counter. A 90cm range cooker in a Canons Drive house is £114, and a two-oven AGA is £143. The price is fixed on the phone. There is no premium-area loading for a postcode like this one.
The soaking is done outside the house
Racks, shelves, trays and side runners lift out and soak in a heated tank in the van at the kerb. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are done by hand indoors with non-caustic products, and the oven is heat-tested and signed off before we leave, which on a range with several cavities is the part that takes the time. Canons Park station opened on 10 December 1932 as Canons Park (Edgware), lost the suffix the year after, went to the Bakerloo in 1939 and the Jubilee in 1979.
