Canons Drive began as the carriage drive to a palace. James Brydges, later Duke of Chandos, took over the estate in 1713 and set his new house in about 400 acres of park and garden; it was pulled down in 1747, three years after his death, and the house built on its foundations from 1747 now belongs to the North London Collegiate School.
The 1926 estate on Canons Drive
In 1926 George Cross bought 85 acres of the park from the Pards Estate, a trust Sir Arthur du Cros had set up in 1919. Cross wanted houses that were, in Harrow's appraisal, "faithful reproductions of old Kentish black and white sixteenth century" farmhouses. The architect A. J. Butcher planned the layout, kept the trees, the lake and a smaller basin, and cut the old carriage road into 30-foot frontages. Permissions ran from 1927 to 1936, for houses designed by Butcher and by others, most notably Sandon Brothers, and early publicity offered three- to six-bedroom houses, detached and semi-detached, with garages.
Harrow's planning committee agreed the estate's designation as a conservation area on 19 April 1990. In the census area that takes in the eastern end of Canons Drive, Lake View, Powell Close and Canons Close (Harrow 002C), 31.5% of the 623 households lived in a detached house in 2021, 43.3% in a purpose-built flat, and 44.5% owned their home outright.

A house of four or more bedrooms, with the kitchen extended at the back, is the kind of home where a range cooker or an AGA turns up. They take longer than a built-in single, so say which you have when you ring:

Parking on Canons Drive
Harrow's conservation area appraisal notes that only three roads give vehicles a way into the estate: Lake View, Canons Drive and Dalkeith Grove. On the main stretch of Canons Drive the houses stand about 18 to 20 metres back, behind wide grass verges and an avenue of tall cedars, and many were built with a garage and a drive.
On the council's zone map, most of Canons Drive and Lake View are in zone TB, controlled from 11am to 12pm on weekdays, while the bays by Canons Park station are in zone CS, 8am to 6.30pm Monday to Saturday. With the house that far back, a space on your drive saves the team a long walk, so please keep one free if you can, and check the signs in case the hours have changed.

Is Canons Park the same place as Little Stanmore?

My AGA is on all the time. What do I need to do before the visit?
Switch it off the night before, so it has cooled by the time we arrive. The clean takes about half a day.
Can the extractor hood be cleaned too?
Yes, it is £28 on top of the oven price and done on the same visit.
How long does a double oven take?
About two hours. The racks come out to be soaked and cleaned separately while the two cavities and the glass are done by hand in the kitchen.
