Rayners Lane was a road long before it was a suburb. Harrow Council's conservation area appraisal says the lane has linked Pinner and Roxeth since medieval times, and that until the Metropolitan Railway station came in 1906 the only farmstead near it was Rayners Lane Farm, at the corner of Farm Avenue.
Shops below and flats above on Alexandra Avenue
The centre, south of the station, is a conservation area. Harrow Council's appraisal dates its buildings to the later phase of the suburb, between 1935 and 1938, and most follow one pattern: shops on the ground floor and flats upstairs. Four of the blocks, which the appraisal dates to 1934 to 1936, are the work of one architect, H J Mark, who used brown brick and white render under steep brown tiled roofs, with arched doorways leading up to the flats. Blocks of flats along the southern part of Alexandra Avenue went up in the same years.
The census area that takes in those parades (Harrow 032A) had 635 households in 2021. Of those, 40.2% lived in a purpose-built block of flats and 6.3% in a commercial building, the census category that takes in flats over shops; 52.9% rented privately. Harrow's 2024-25 profile counts about 191 shopfronts across the district centre, on Alexandra Avenue, Rayners Lane, Imperial Drive and Village Way.
A flat over a shop means a street door, a flight of stairs and usually a compact kitchen with a built-in single. The racks, trays and side runners still come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are done by hand upstairs. The Grosvenor, the station and the white tower
Three buildings stand out. The former Grosvenor cinema, designed in 1936 by F E Bromige, has a triple-bowed Art Deco front with a stylised elephant's trunk rising from the entrance canopy; it is listed Grade II* and has been the Zoroastrian Centre since 2000. The station, by Charles Holden and Reginald Uren, was built in 1938 in grey brick with a double-height hall on the bridge over the tracks, and is Grade II. At 468-472 Alexandra Avenue, White-Cooper and Turner's white-rendered shops of 1937 carry a tower that seems to float above its band of windows.

Parking in zone L
The streets round the station sit in zone L, Rayners Lane, which on the council's parking map (read on 5 October 2026) has more bays than any other Harrow zone: 671 for permit holders and 153 pay and display. Further south, Alexandra Avenue leaves the zone. Harrow's CPZ page says the times on the street signs are the ones that apply, so read the plate before you book a time.
