Stanmore Park was a country house long before it was an RAF station. John Vardy began the mansion in 1763, Sir William Chambers completed it, and it stood south-west of the parish church on land held by the Drummond family.
From Stanmore House to RAF Stanmore Park
George Carr Glyn, later Lord Wolverton, bought the house in 1848. It spent some fifty years as a boys' preparatory school, then was sold with 56 acres and pulled down in 1938. The Royal Auxiliary Air Force's No. 3 Balloon Centre took the ground, followed by Balloon Command headquarters and later by groups of Transport Command and Fighter Command. In January 1997 a defence minister told the Commons the station would close on 1 April that year.
Houses and flats now cover much of the old station. The postcodes on Carr Close, Glyn Court and Lady Aylesford Avenue were first issued between December 2002 and June 2004, so those homes date from the early 2000s. Some of the street names point back to the house: Lady Aylesford Avenue matches the Countess of Aylesford, who was living there in 1816, while Glyn Court and Carr Close match the buyer of 1848. Elliott Road is older than the estate.
Kitchens on the old RAF land
The census area that takes in Lady Aylesford Avenue and Elliott Road (Harrow 003B) had 787 households in 2021, and no one kind of home dominates it. 30.7% lived in a purpose-built flat, 29.7% in a detached house, 19.9% in a semi and 19.1% in a terrace. Homes of the early 2000s were usually fitted with a built-in oven, under the worktop or at eye level in a tall unit, and a replacement bought since may well be pyrolytic.

North of Uxbridge Road the pattern changes. In the census area covering Embry Way, Old Lodge Way, Culverlands Close and Aylmer Drive (Harrow 001C), 54.2% of the 695 households lived in a detached house in 2021, and 49.4% owned their home outright. A large detached kitchen is where a 90cm range cooker or an AGA is most likely to turn up. A range takes two to three hours; a two-oven AGA takes about half a day and has to be switched off the night before, so it is cool when we arrive.

Parking near the old RAF site
On Harrow's parking zone map, Lady Aylesford Avenue, Glyn Court, Carr Close and Elliott Road fall outside the controlled zones. Cherry Tree Way, close by, has a small zone of its own, controlled 10am to 2pm on weekdays. Restrictions do change, so please read the plate at the end of your road. The team needs somewhere to park for the whole visit.

Is Stanmore Park a separate place from Stanmore?

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
