On Thursday 7 July 1898 Bobby Phillimore of Kendals Hall put about 200 acres west of Watling Street up for auction in 58 plots, with new roads called Aldenham Avenue and The Crosspath in the sale details. Hertsmere's conservation appraisal for north Radlett dates Radlett's growth in earnest from that sale.
Radlett's houses, from the 1898 plots to infill
The railway had come thirty years before. The Midland line through the Tykeswater valley opened on 13 July 1868, yet in 1871 there were still only a few houses beside the church, the station and the pubs. After the Phillimore auction, Charles Part sold large parts of the Aldenham Lodge estate, east of Watling Street and north of Shenley Hill, for housing too. Between the wars the Wigg brothers, builders (William opened their Watling Street office in 1911), put up The Grove estate.
Then the Metropolitan Green Belt arrived in the 1950s, drawn tight around the village. Since then new building in Radlett has mostly meant infill, or an older house knocked down and replaced.
Two Hertsmere wards cover the village. In Aldenham East, 59.0% of the 1,918 households lived in a detached house at the 2021 Census, and 42.3% owned their home outright, with no mortgage left. Aldenham West, which also takes in Letchmore Heath, is more mixed: 36.4% detached, 27.2% semi-detached and 15.6% terraced.

For the oven, the size of the house matters more than its age. A large detached kitchen is the usual home of a 90cm range or an AGA. A flat in one of the purpose-built blocks (21.4% of Aldenham East households lived in one) will normally have a single built in under the worktop. Either way, racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen.
Range cookers and AGAs in Radlett's bigger kitchens
These take longer than a built-in oven, so each has its own fixed price. If you are not sure which you have, measure the width before you ring.
- 90cm range
- A floor-standing cooker, usually with two ovens side by side and a grill. £143; allow two to three hours.
- 100cm range
- The wider size, priced at £167.
- Range hob or hood
- Done in the same visit if you want it, for £48.
- Two-oven AGA
- Cast iron and normally kept hot. Turn it off the night before so it has cooled by morning; £143, about half a day. A four-oven AGA is £187.
The range cooker cleaning page has more on the method, and our AGA care guide covers the weeks between cleans.

Parking for the van in Radlett's CPZ
Hertsmere runs controlled parking zones in Radlett, Potters Bar, Borehamwood and Bushey. Hours vary with the kind of control used; the council's general guide is 8am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, with no controls on Sundays or bank holidays, although yellow lines apply all year. A visitor in a resident bay needs a permit or voucher from the resident, or the resident can log the van's registration on their virtual parking account.
The council also warns that not every home inside a CPZ may be eligible for permits, and it names a new build as the example. If you live in one of the newer flats, check how visitors park before the day. A drive or a bay a few doors away is all the team needs. A Sunday visit, at the weekday price, avoids the zone hours altogether.
Shenley, Letchmore Heath and Aldenham village
Letchmore Heath and Aldenham share Aldenham parish with Radlett, and each village is a conservation area of its own. Shenley, to the east, is a separate parish and ward. In 1928 Middlesex County Council bought the mansion and grounds of Porters Park there and built a large hospital; most of the hospital buildings were later pulled down and replaced with housing, though the chapel and the water tower were kept. Shenley ward was 31.2% detached, 31.8% semi-detached and 24.3% terraced in 2021.
Radlett oven cleaning questions
Do I have to turn the AGA off before you come?
Yes, the night before, so it is cool when we arrive. A two-oven AGA takes about half a day, and you look inside before we pack up; if a corner is not right, we put it right before we leave.
Can you come on a Saturday inside the CPZ?
Yes. Hertsmere's zones generally run on Saturdays, so the van will need a visitor permit or a paid space, and the plate on your street has the final word. Sundays are free of zone controls, and weekend visits cost the weekday price.
Where is the oven cleaned, in the kitchen or outside?
The cavity, door glass and seals are cleaned by hand, normally in your kitchen, after dust sheets go down. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. Some teams have a heated tank on the van and use it when they can park close; otherwise everything is done in the kitchen. The price is the same either way, and you can ask when you book.
How long does a built-in single take?
About 90 minutes, and it costs £77. A built-in double takes about two hours and is £110.

Brilliant clean, my oven looks like brand new. A 5 star clean.
I would certainly recommend this service, very efficient and good value for money. The young man did a great job and even cleaned the kitchen floor. Thank you.
Once again a great job guys, I will see you in a couple of months.
