The old village on the Hill became a conservation area in 1968. It covers 21 hectares of the western slope, from the rear of the High Street's east side down to Bessborough Road, with Byron Hill Road to the south and Church Fields to the north.
Terraces built for artisans and school staff
Harrow School was founded in 1572 under a charter from Elizabeth I, and the village grew up to serve it. Harrow Council's appraisal of the area says a significant proportion of its dwellings and streets were built and laid out to house artisans and school employees during the school's expansion between 1859 and 1884. West Street and Nelson Road are terraced rows, mostly two storeys with pitched roofs and chimneys; the appraisal calls the area's usual materials red or yellow stock brick, often with slate roofs. On West Street the roofs step down the slope, while Nelson Road, cut into the hill, has a more even roofline. The conservation area has 43 grade II listings, among them the 18th-century cottage row at 25A to 35 High Street. Byron Hill Road, the top of Waldron Road and the western end of Crown Street are less regular, with lower density and differently shaped plots, the houses set back behind front gardens, driveways and brick walls. Leigh Court, three storeys of flats from 1961, stands at the base of a steep slope off Byron Hill Road.

Parking the van in zone HH
The appraisal is blunt about the streets. Few of the Hill's houses have off-street parking, cars parked on both sides narrow the roads further, and in places there is no pavement at all. West Street narrows after its junction with Crown Street and is quite steep in places.
On Harrow's parking map the village streets, High Street included, are zone HH, and the council counts 46 pay and display bays in it. The Roxborough Park streets on the north side of the hill are zone E1, with longer hours. Check the signs on the street before you rely on either.

The nearest legal space decides the walk to your door. A weekday visit after 2pm, or any weekend, falls outside zone HH's hours, and weekends cost the same as weekdays.

The Harrow on the Hill ward reaches well beyond the village, and at the 2021 Census it had 3,941 households. Of those, 36.8% rented privately, 13.4% rented from the council or a housing association and 48.5% owned their home. The price is set by the appliance: a single, a double, a range cooker and an AGA each have one fixed figure, agreed on the phone before anyone drives up the hill.
A single takes about 90 minutes on site and a double about two hours. Dust sheets go down first. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors; the door is split where its design allows.
