Marsh Farm was still working here in the early 1930s, owned by St Bartholomew's Hospital, and 96 acres of it went under the builders when the fields were sold. By 1935 houses ran along both sides of Whitchurch Lane, Camrose Avenue reached nearly across the old parish towards Turner Road, and Dale Avenue and its offshoots had tied the new roads through to Mollison Way.
The road names come from an aerodrome
Stag Lane was a private aerodrome from 1915 to 1933 and the main base of the de Havilland Aircraft Company from 1920, which bought the freehold two years later. Jim Mollison and Amy Johnson both flew out of it. When the field went for housing the streets kept the names, which is why Mollison Way exists, and that is about the only trace left on the ground.
Nearly all of it is inter-war semi-detached
The stock here is the 1930s semi, plus two blocks of council housing put up at the same time: the Chandos estate around Buckingham Road and the Berridge estate around Bacon Lane, 304 houses between them. Kitchens in that type sit at the back and were sized for a small freestanding cooker, so where an owner has knocked through and fitted a built-in pair the oven is usually a tall housed unit. A double oven in a Camrose Avenue semi is £110.
Racks go out to the van, the cavity is done indoors
Shelves, trays, side runners and the racks lift out and soak in a heated tank in the van, on the road outside. Nothing soaks in your sink. The cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products, so there is no smell in the house afterwards, and the oven is heat-tested before we sign it off. Little Stanmore was an ancient parish, also called Whitchurch, until 1934, when Harrow Urban District absorbed it. The local shops are the parade on Whitchurch Lane and the run south around Honeypot Lane.
