The flint west tower of St Lawrence's on Whitchurch Lane dates from the early 16th century. The rest of the church was rebuilt for the Duke of Chandos by John James in 1714 to 1716, with a painted interior, an organ case and a monument to the first Duke, and it has been listed Grade I since 1951.
Whitchurch, the parish that became part of Harrow
Little Stanmore was a parish of its own, also called Whitchurch, and it took in the western side of Edgware. It was run from Hendon until 1 April 1934, when the parish was abolished and most of it went into Harrow Urban District. Its population shows how fast the fields went: 1,069 people in 1901, 2,015 in 1921 and 6,918 in 1931.
Semis were going up in Whitchurch Gardens by 1911. By 1935 houses lined both sides of Whitchurch Lane from Edgware to the new Canons Park station, and Camrose Avenue reached almost across the parish to Turner Road. The council added the Chandos estate round Buckingham Road and the Berridge estate round Bacon Lane, 304 houses between them, and after 1945 put 56 more flats and houses on Camrose Avenue.
Half the homes by the church are rented
The census area round St Lawrence's and this end of Whitchurch Lane (Harrow 002E) had 675 households in 2021. Half of them, 50.7%, rented privately, most through a landlord or a letting agency, and only 28.6% owned outright. 36.1% lived in a purpose-built flat, 22.7% in a semi and 16.2% in a terrace.
With that many lets, the end of a tenancy is a regular event here, and the oven is on the checkout clerk's list. Parking on Whitchurch Lane
On Harrow's zone map much of Whitchurch Lane is outside the controlled zones, but not all of it. St Lawrence Close has its own zone, controlled 10am to 3pm on weekdays; the zones by Canons Park station run 8am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday; and further along the lane towards Edgware other zones apply, some of them running 8.30am to 8.30pm, Monday to Saturday.
