Belmont Circle has four exits because it was built for a tram line across London that never arrived, and the circular parade cutting Kenton Lane is still what the area orients itself around. Belmont sits between Stanmore, Kenton, Wealdstone and Queensbury, and the HA3 and HA7 boundary runs through it. The ward held 11,343 people at the 2011 census.
A suburb built in one decade
The branch line from Harrow and Wealdstone up to Stanmore Village, known locally as the Rattler, got a station at Belmont only in 1932, and once it had one the fields went under middle-class housing across the rest of the decade, with shops and the Essoldo cinema following at the Circle. That is why the stock reads so consistently: 1930s semis and detached houses, bay fronts, kitchens at the back. The railway is gone. The Belmont Trail follows much of the old track between Wealdstone and Stanmore, and the platform site is a car park.
What thirties houses do to a cooker
A 1930s Harrow semi has usually had its kitchen knocked through to the old scullery or out into a side return, so the cooker ends up freestanding in a run of units or, in the refitted ones, integrated under a worktop. Either way the racks, trays and side runners soak in the heated tank in the van, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are hand-degreased indoors with non-caustic products. Older ground than the houses suggest
The name comes from a mound raised in the early 18th century by the Duke of Chandos, who put a summer house on top for the view; that land is Stanmore Golf Course now. William Loudon set up a model farm on Kenton Lane about 1810 and the farmhouse still stands. Belmont Terrace on Honeypot Lane dates from 1827.
