Sudbury Hill Harrow station opened on 1 March 1906 as South Harrow, on the Great Central Railway's new line out of Marylebone, and took its present name on 19 July 1926. It is a Chiltern Railways stop on Greenford Road, in the London Borough of Harrow.
Three boroughs within a short walk
About 220 metres south along Greenford Road is Sudbury Hill tube station on the Piccadilly line, designed by Charles Holden in 1931 and listed at Grade II in 1994. The two are easy to confuse. The tube station is on the Harrow and Ealing border, and the UB6 postcodes beside it are in Ealing's North Greenford ward, while the Chiltern station is in HA1, in Harrow's Harrow on the Hill ward. Brent begins a few hundred metres to the east, where the postcodes are HA0 and the ward is Brent's Sudbury, so an address near here could be in any of the three.
Flats by the line, garden-suburb houses on Orley Farm Road
Close to the station flats are the biggest group. In the small census area around it (Harrow 029C, 711 households), 45.9% of households lived in a purpose-built block of flats in 2021, 23.6% in a semi and 14.2% in a terrace; 33.2% rented privately and 11.1% rented from the council.
Up the slope to the north-west it changes. Orley Farm Road and Hill Close were laid out before the First World War by the South Hill Estates Company, set up in 1910 by local landowners and the architect Samuel Pointon Taylor, who planned the area in consultation with Raymond Unwin of Letchworth Garden City. Harrow's appraisal dates the houses on the two roads to between 1910 and 1930 and notes their wide grass verges; the full scheme was never finished because of the war. Both roads were added to the South Hill Avenue conservation area in 1990.
