Broadway Cottages, the row at 57 to 65 The Broadway, is a timber-framed terrace with a jettied first floor, listed at Grade II in 1969 and dated by Historic England to the 16th century. The Victoria County History thought its 98-foot jetty unequalled in Middlesex.
Flats round the Broadway and Church Road
The old village stood along Church Road at the foot of Stanmore Hill, and in the 1930s demolitions and road widening there were followed by new shops in Church Road and the Broadway. Today the census area covering the Broadway and Church Road (Harrow 001D) is half flats. Of its 1,104 households in 2021, 49.9% lived in a purpose-built block, and 6.0% lived in a commercial building, the census heading for homes above shops and offices.
A flat like that usually has a compact kitchen with a built-in single or a slim freestanding cooker, and a staircase between the kitchen and the street. Stairs add a little time and nothing else. The racks, trays and side runners still come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand upstairs, after dust sheets go down.
Renting round the Broadway
Stanmore tube station, east of the Broadway, opened on 10 December 1932, at the end of a new Metropolitan Railway branch. It passed to the Bakerloo line in 1939 and to the Jubilee in 1979, and it is still the end of the line.
In the same area 27.9% of households rented privately in 2021 and 11.2% rented from a social landlord. Stanmore's older houses, from Gordon Avenue to the Glebe estate
Gordon Avenue was laid out after Frederick Gordon bought the Bentley Priory estate in 1882; he also controlled the Harrow and Stanmore Railway, whose branch reached Stanmore in 1890. Great Stanmore was still small after the First World War, with 1,849 people in 1921 and 2,688 in 1931. Between the wars the council built 111 houses on the Glebe estate south of the Broadway and 32 on the Wolverton Road estate, and after 1945 it added 44 flats in Bernays Close.

The price is set by the appliance alone, a single, a double, a range or an AGA, and it is agreed on the phone before anyone comes out, weekday or weekend.
Zone B: one controlled hour round the Broadway
On Harrow's own zone map, Stanmore's zone B takes in the Broadway and Church Road, and it is controlled for one hour only, 3pm to 4pm, Monday to Friday. The council counts 484 permit bays and 98 pay-and-display bays in it. A single oven takes about 90 minutes, so a morning visit is finished long before the controlled hour; a double or a range booked for the afternoon may run across it. Side roads off the Broadway can sit in other zones with different hours, so give us the street when you ring, and read the plate at the end of your road in case the hours have changed.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
