Roundshaw, on the borough's eastern edge, was built on the site of Croydon Airport, and its roads carry the airport's names: Mollison Drive, Lindbergh Road, Avro Way. Building began in 1965 to designs by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, and the first tenants moved in during August 1967. From 1998 about 1,000 of the original concrete flats and maisonettes were demolished and replaced with low-rise houses and brick-built flats, so much of today's Roundshaw is younger than its street names.

Sutton's housing, from Newtown to BedZED

Sutton itself is a railway town. The station opened in 1847, the population more than doubled between 1851 and 1861, and the Victorian streets east of the High Street known as Newtown went up with no single developer in charge. Three of the town's four conservation areas are residential, among them Landseer Road, with its Edwardian villas, and the Arts and Crafts houses of the Sutton Garden Suburb.

Between 1928 and 1936 the London County Council built the St Helier estate across what is now the boundary with Merton. The part north of Green Lane and Bishopsford Road is in Merton and the rest is in Sutton. In St Helier East ward 62.2% of households lived in a terraced house at the 2021 Census, while 39.6% rented from the council or a housing association. Hackbridge has the newest homes. BedZED, the Peabody Trust's housing scheme designed by Bill Dunster to be carbon neutral, was built between 2000 and 2002 about 500 yards north of the station, and Barratt's New Mill Quarter brings 440 more; 55.4% of Hackbridge ward households lived in a purpose-built flat in 2021.

Across the borough the Census counted 82,347 households, and 64.4% of them owned their home: 28.4% outright and 36.0% with a mortgage or loan. Only 20.3% rented privately. The middle of the town is the exception. In Sutton South ward 73.0% of households lived in a purpose-built block of flats and 43.5% rented privately. At the other end of the scale, 37.0% of households in Cheam ward lived in a detached house.

So a visit in Cheam may well mean a double or a 90cm range in a family kitchen, while a flat near Sutton station or in Hackbridge is more likely to have an integrated single under the worktop. Some of those newer singles are pyrolytic.

Each appliance has one price, given on the phone before the visit: a single, a double, a 90cm range, a two-oven AGA. It does not change between Belmont and Hackbridge, and a weekend visit costs the same as a weekday one.

Sutton's permit zones, CPZs and PPAs

Sutton keeps its controlled parking zones to a few places. The council names them as Sutton Town Centre, Belmont, Park Lane in Cheam, Wellington Avenue and Longfellow, with a separate scheme on the Collingwood Estate, and it runs Permit Parking Areas for residents on other streets. The town centre zone is split into colour-coded areas. The council says each zone has its own operational hours, and some have different times in different parts of the same zone.

That makes the sign on the bay the guide that counts. If your road is in a zone or a Permit Parking Area, say so when you book, and whether you have visitor vouchers: the team needs somewhere to park. The council's page on where its zones operate has the map.

Checkout cleans in the town-centre flats

Private renting in Sutton is concentrated in the middle of the town: 43.5% of households in Sutton South and 35.8% in Sutton Central rented privately in 2021, against 20.3% across the borough. When one of those tenancies ends, the oven goes on the inventory like the rest of the flat. Agents can have the invoice made out to the agency and ask for photos for the checkout file, and keys for an empty flat can be collected by arrangement. Sutton oven cleaning questions

Can you clean an AGA in Carshalton on a Saturday?

Yes. We work seven days a week and weekends are charged at the weekday price, in Carshalton as anywhere else. A two-oven AGA is £143 and takes about half a day; switch it off the night before so it is cool when we arrive.

How long does the integrated single in a Hackbridge flat take?

Around an hour and a half. The racks and trays come out and are soaked and cleaned separately while the cavity and door glass are done by hand in the kitchen, and the door is split if its design allows.

My road in Belmont is in a CPZ. Will that be a problem?

Not if the van can park legally close by. Belmont is one of the council's named zones, and the council says visitor vouchers marked BH are valid in its permit-holder bays, so check with the council that one covers a work van; tell us the hours shown on your bay sign when you book.

What if I need to move the appointment?
