Croydon Airport stayed open until 1959, and part of its land is now the Roundshaw estate, where the roads are named after aircraft and aviators, Mollison Drive among them.
An estate built twice
The first tenants moved in during August 1967. Area G, approved in 1967, was two six-storey blocks by C. Culpin and Partners, built by Wates, with 60 homes on Shaw Way and 98 on Carter Close. Regeneration began in 1998. About 1,000 of the concrete flats and maisonettes came down and were replaced with low-rise houses and brick-built flats, 674 of the original brick homes were kept and given pitched roofs, and the programme finished in 2010.
Sutton council owned the estate until a residents' ballot in 2007 moved it to Roundshaw Homes, run by Metropolitan and Hyde; in August 2015 the 1,800 homes passed to Metropolitan alone.
Renting from a housing association on Roundshaw
The ward Roundshaw shares with South Beddington had 4,067 households at the 2021 Census. 35.6% rented from a social landlord, and most of those, 30.0% of all households, from a housing association or similar landlord; 54.2% owned their home and 2.1% were shared owners. Only 8.0% rented privately.
A flat rebuilt in the 2000s often has a built-in oven in a fitted kitchen, and a kept 1960s home may have had several kitchens since. Either way the method is the same. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors.

Parking on the estate
Mollison Drive and the estate roads are not on Sutton council's parking checker, the list of streets in a permit area, and no council parking zone covers Roundshaw. Bays on a housing association estate can carry their own rules, so the signs on the day decide. A flat on an upper floor is fine; say which floor when you call.
