Regular trains reached Caterham on 5 August 1856, on a single-track branch from what is now Purley that was built mainly to carry firestone from the quarries south of the town. The station and the Railway Hotel opened that year; the present station building dates from 1900.
Two Caterham institutions that became housing
Two large institutions shaped Caterham. The Guards' depot at Caterham Barracks, on the Hill, ran from 1877 until 1995. Between 1998 and 2006 the site was rebuilt as The Village, 361 homes of mixed tenures, with the listed chapel and eighteen other old buildings kept and refurbished. The Village is in Westway ward, where 26.2% of households lived in flats and 25.0% in terraced houses at the 2021 Census.
The other was St Lawrence's Hospital, which opened in 1870 as the Metropolitan Asylum for Chronic Imbeciles and closed in 1994. Most of its buildings were pulled down; the nurses' home was converted into flats.
Homes built or converted since the 1990s usually have fitted kitchens with a built-in single or a double under the worktop. The clean is the same either way. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors, on dust sheets, and the door is split where its design allows.
Flats in the Valley, detached houses beyond
Tandridge as a whole is a district of owners and detached houses: 74.5% of its 35,623 households owned their home in 2021, and 35.6% lived in a detached house, with 17.7% in a purpose-built flat. Caterham is more mixed. Valley ward, around the station, was 37.5% flats. Harestone ward, which takes in Harestone Valley Road, had both: 39.2% detached houses and 34.2% flats.
Further out the houses get bigger. Chaldon ward was 82.3% detached and 92.5% owner-occupied, and Woldingham 75.7% detached. In Warlingham West ward 51.1% of households had a detached house and 88.0% owned their home; Warlingham has its own page, as do Hamsey Green and Chelsham. Whyteleafe is the exception: its ward was 50.8% flats, with 22.9% of households renting privately.

The cooker sets the price, and it is agreed on the phone before the visit, so a double costs £110 in the Valley and on the Hill alike.
Parking on the Hill and in the Valley
The council car park at Town End, Caterham-on-the-Hill (CR3 5UX), is free for the first three hours, with no return within three hours; charges run from 7am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday. That covers a single oven (about 90 minutes) or a double (about two hours), though not always a 90cm range, which can take three. In the Valley, the Morrisons car park is free for up to two hours but is not run by the council.
Out on the streets, Surrey County Council has enforced parking through the contractor NSL since 1 April 2023. Its 2024 parking review for Tandridge, assessed from May that year and advertised in December, included plans for both the Caterham Hill and Caterham Valley divisions, so the restrictions on your street may have changed recently. For a single or a double, yes. A 90cm range takes two to three hours and an AGA about half a day, so for those a space at the house is better.
Do you come out to Chaldon and Woldingham?

I rent a flat in Whyteleafe and my tenancy is ending. Can the agent have the invoice?
Yes. It can be addressed to the agency, and photos can be taken for the checkout file if they want them.
When should I turn off my AGA?
The night before the visit, so it has cooled right down by the morning.
