Honeywood, the house at the west end of Carshalton Ponds, was built in the later 18th century round the core of an older cottage with chalk walls, and a watercourse still runs beneath it.
Weatherboard and brick on West Street
Honeywood is one of a tight group of listed buildings round the two ponds, with the Portland stone Leoni Bridge of 1825 to 1828 and All Saints Church, parts of which date from before 1150. By the middle of the 19th century Carshalton had 2,411 people, the largest village in what became the borough of Sutton.
West Street, which runs north from the corner of Pound Street with the listed wall of Carshalton House along its west side, has twelve numbered entries on the national list of historic buildings. No. 70 has a mid to late 18th-century front of painted weatherboarding and was listed in 1954. Nos 20 to 24 are a low two-storey range that may be 17th century under a later front, and Nos 72 to 78 are an early to mid 19th-century row. All twelve sit inside the Carshalton Village conservation area.
Houses of this age were not built round a fitted kitchen. Where an oven has gone into an old cottage, it usually fills whatever space the walls allowed, sometimes in a narrow back addition. That does not change the job. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, the cavity and door glass are degreased by hand where the oven stands, and dust sheets go down before any of it.

CS1 permit hours, 11am to 1pm
Sutton's Carshalton permit area, CS1, started on 2 March 2020 and was extended on 2 April 2024. It covers parts of West Street and North Street, with Mill Lane, Station Road, Denmark Road, Nightingale Road, Palmerston Road and Rochester Road among others, and runs Monday to Friday from 11am to 1pm only, according to the council's parking checker. Outside those two hours, and at weekends, the CS1 permit hours do not apply, though check the signs when you park. The team needs somewhere to park.
Carshalton oven cleaning questions
Is Carshalton Central a separate place?
It is the same village. The Carshalton Central page covers the High Street east of the ponds, The Square and Carshalton Park, where the permit zones are CA1 and CA2.
My cottage is listed. Does that change anything?
No. The work is confined to the oven: the removable parts come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity is cleaned by hand in place.
Can I book a weekday morning on West Street?
Yes. A single oven takes about 90 minutes, so a visit that starts early may finish before the 11am permit window. If it will run into those hours, say whether you have a visitor permit when you book.
Do you go up to Carshalton Beeches as well?

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
