Oven cleaning on the St Helier estate from £77 with London Oven Cleaners. The oven goes back together and is heated, you inspect it, and anything not right is redone there and then.
The London County Council built St Helier between 1928 and 1936 on 825 acres of farmland, much of it given over to lavender and herbs, and named it after Lady St Helier, an LCC alderman from 1910 to 1927. St Helier in Jersey objected to the name and suggested Jeuneville instead, after her earlier name, Lady Mary Jeune.
A cottage estate split between Sutton and Merton
C.J. Wills and Sons did most of the building between early 1929 and the end of 1934. By Sutton council's account there were 9,000 houses and flats for 40,000 people, with 120 acres kept as open space, and it was the largest LCC estate south of the Thames. The northern part, in Morden, is in Merton; the rest is in Sutton, towards Sutton and Carshalton, and covers two Sutton wards, St Helier East and St Helier West. Green Lane is in Merton, and the borough boundary runs a little south of it.
- Cottage estate
- A council estate of low-rise houses with gardens, laid out on garden city lines. Between the wars the LCC built a series of them on open land outside its own boundary; St Helier was the second largest after Becontree.
The minor roads were named after monastic houses, a nod to the priory at Merton and the abbeys that once held Morden, Sutton and Cheam, and they run in alphabetical order from the A's in the north-west. Aberconway Road is at one end and Woburn Road at the other, and a handful of the names are Scottish.

Renting and owning in St Helier West
Most of the buildings are original. In St Helier West ward, 58.3% of the 4,420 households counted at the 2021 Census lived in a terraced house. 37.9% rented from the council or a housing association, 29.3% from the council itself, and 47.1% owned their home; many tenants have bought their houses under the right to buy. 13.5% rented privately.
A kitchen in a two-storey cottage terrace is rarely large, so a freestanding cooker or a built-in single oven is the likely fit; an owner who has extended at the back may have room for a double. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen.

Permit areas SH1, SH2 and SH3 near the hospital
Near St Helier Hospital, which stands on Wrythe Lane near the top of Rose Hill, Sutton runs three permit parking areas, in force since July 2021: SH1 around Westminster Road and Wendling Road, SH2 around Thornton Road, Tintern Road, Tewkesbury Road and Woburn Road, and SH3 around Stavordale Road, Kinloss Road and Lindores Road. All three are controlled Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. A Saturday or Sunday visit is outside those hours and costs the same as a weekday. Reigate Avenue is not on the council's list of permit roads.
St Helier oven cleaning questions
Is my St Helier address in Sutton or Merton?
The estate straddles the boundary: the northern part is in Merton and the southern part in Sutton. Green Lane is in Merton and the boundary runs a little south of it, so a road near Green Lane can be on either side; your council tax bill shows which borough you are in. The oven price is identical in both.
Can a council or housing association tenant book an oven clean?
Yes. The price is the one agreed on the phone.
I live on Tintern Road. Do you need one of my visitor permits?
On a weekday, SH2 is controlled from 8am to 6pm, so tell us whether you have a visitor permit when you book. At the weekend there is no permit time, and the price does not change.
How long does a single oven take?
About 90 minutes, including the time to heat it at the end so you can look inside before we go.

What customers tell us
Once again a great job guys, I will see you in a couple of months.
Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
I would certainly recommend this service, very efficient and good value for money. The young man did a great job and even cleaned the kitchen floor. Thank you.
