Wraysbury's historic core is St Andrew's church, the George Inn and a triangular village green. The church dates from the early 13th century; the George is timber-framed and dates from the 16th century or earlier. In the south of the parish, on the National Trust's Ankerwycke land, stand the ruins of a Benedictine priory and a yew the Trust counts as its oldest tree. The Victoria County History of 1925 gives the yew's girth as 27 ft 8 in in 1813 and 30 ft by 1906.
Wraysbury is mostly detached houses
After the railway reached the village in the late 1840s, houses spread out along the roads leading off The Green, and the fastest growth came from 1939 onwards, with most of the modern housing spreading westwards to the Thames. At the 2021 Census, 1,043 of the 1,624 households in Wraysbury parish (64.2%) lived in a detached house, about twice the share for Windsor and Maidenhead as a whole (30.7%). Just 5.8% lived in a purpose-built block of flats.
The west side of the village, roughly between the river and the B376, flooded in January 2003 and again in January and February 2014. The Horton and Wraysbury Neighbourhood Plan says its flood policy will support only one-for-one replacement of houses and extensions in Flood Zones 2 and 3, and it records that new houses in the area have frequently been built much bigger than the ones they replace. A rebuilt or extended house often gets a new kitchen, and a bigger kitchen has room for more than a single oven.
Victorian buildings around the High Street
The Neighbourhood Plan says many buildings in the High Street area are Victorian, and it lists these, building by building, as locally important heritage: 'Albert Place' at 6–12 Staines Road, 'Alexandra Villas' at 4 Staines Road, 4–12 and 15–33 High Street, 1–7 Station Road and Brook Villa on The Green. The Perseverance pub on the High Street is listed Grade II.
A Victorian house that has not been extended often has a narrow kitchen, with a freestanding cooker or a single oven under the worktop. Size does not change the method. Dust sheets go down; the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen. The door is split where its design allows.
