Powis Street was laid out in 1783 by William and Thomas Powis, Greenwich brewers, to join St Mary's Church to the hamlet at Green's End. In the 1890s the local architect Henry Hudson Church remodelled much of it, and by the end of the century it was established as a major shopping street and commercial centre for the wider district.

The council's 2022 appraisal of the Woolwich conservation area, designated in May 2019, describes Powis Street and Hare Street as continuous frontages of mostly three storeys, with the shop at street level and ornate upper floors above. It also lists vacant shop units, especially at the west end of Powis Street, and wants empty upper floors brought back into use; Historic England put the area on its Heritage at Risk Register in October 2019.
Some people do live above shops here. At the 2021 Census, 115 households in Woolwich Arsenal ward, which takes in the town centre, lived in a commercial building, the Census heading that includes flats over shops. Most of the ward's 5,717 households (77.9%) were in purpose-built blocks.
A flat reached by a side door and a staircase usually has a small kitchen, often with a slim freestanding cooker or a built-in single under the worktop. Stairs change the timing, not the method. Parking the van in the Woolwich Arsenal zone
The council's page for the Woolwich Arsenal parking zone (WA) gives permit hours of 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, and the council's January 2026 traffic notice lists bays on Powis Street, Spray Street and Wellington Street in that zone. The same notice proposed adding Sundays to the Woolwich Arsenal, Woolwich Common and Woolwich Market zones, and on 14 August 2026 a cabinet member agreed that the Woolwich scheme should go ahead.
The council's page for the zone still showed Monday to Saturday in October 2026 and no start date for the new days had been published, so check the sign on your street before booking a Sunday. On any day we need somewhere to park; give us the street and the nearest side road when you call. Weekends cost the same as weekdays.

What should I do before you arrive?
